After their win in 1956, Switzerland continued with their format of a national final to select their entry for the 1957 contest. Before Eurovision National final The final was held on 11 February 1957 in St. Moritz. Three artists competed to represent Switzerland: last year's winner Lys Assia; Jo Roland, who participated at the national final of 1956; and Gianni Ferraresi, and the winning song was chosen by the votes of 4 regional juries. Lys Assia
Lys Assia (born Rosa Mina Schärer; 3 March 1924 – 24 March 2018) was a Swiss singer who won the first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. Assia was born in Rupperswil, Aargau, and began her stage career as a dancer, but changed to singing in 1940 after successfully standing in for a female singer. Eurovision Song Contest In 1956 she was the winner of the first Eurovision Song Contest, in which she sang for Switzerland. She had also been in the German national final of that year and returned to the contest again for Switzerland in 1957 and 1958. Géo Voumard
Géo Voumard (2 December 1920 – 3 September 2008) was a Swiss jazz pianist and composer. He was a co-founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival and composer of the song "'' Refrain''" which won the first Eurovision Song Contest. Life and career Voumard was born in Biel/Bienne. He originally studied architecture in college before starting his musical career. Music career Voumard joined the Hazy Osterwald Orchestra in 1944. Four years later, in 1948, he created his own group. Voumard began broadcasting out of Radio Lausanne, which is now known as Radio Suisse Romande, in 1952. He originally joined Radio Lausanne as an accompanist, pianist, composer and musical producer. In 1966, Voumard became the station's director of pop music. He later served as Radio Lausanne's director of light entertainment from 1969 until 1983. Voumard founded the Montreux Jazz Festival with René Langel and Claude Nobs in 1967. Émile Gardaz (29 August 1931, Échallens, Vaud - 19 December 2007) was a Swiss radio moderator and author, working for Radio suisse romande since 1955. He was the father of comedian Sophie Gardaz. Ten years before his death, in 1997, he was, with Jean-Pierre Thiollet, among the personalities when the township of Delphi appointed the renowned environmentalist Franz Weber a Citoyen d'honneur. The Eurovision Song Contest 1957 was the second edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster (HR) on behalf of ARD, the contest, originally known as the (English: Eurovision Grand Prize of European Song 1957 ) was held on Sunday 3 March 1957 and was hosted at the in Frankfurt, West Germany by German actress Anaid Iplicjian. "Refrain" is a French language, French song co-written by Émile Gardaz and Géo Voumard, and performed by Lys Assia. The song represented Switzerland in the inaugural edition of the Eurovision Song Contest 1956, Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 and became the first winner of the Contest. Willy Berking
Willy Berking (22 June 1910 – 21 May 1979) was a German orchestra conductor, trombonist and composer. Career Berking studied music (piano and composition) in Düsseldorf and then in Berlin, where he formed his first big band at the age of 18 in 1928, writing jazz arrangements for the ensemble. In the 1930s he played trombone with various dance and entertainment orchestras including the Goldene Sieben and the Telefunken Swing Orchestra under Heinz Wehner, with whom he went to Berlin in 1934. Towards the end of 1943 he became director of the studio orchestra for Imperial records, known as the "Berking-top series," which were excellent, swinging sides, despite the Nazi party ban on swing music. At the same time he directed the "propaganda" big band, "Charlie and His Orchestra".
