Jimmy Swinnerton
James Guilford Swinnerton (13 November 1875 – 8 September 1974) was an American cartoonist and a landscape painter of the Southwest deserts. He was known as Jimmy to some and Swinny to others. He signed some of his early cartoons Swin, and on one ephemeral comic strip he used Guilford as his signature. Experimenting with narrative continuity, he played a key role in developing the comic strip at the end of the 19th century. Peter Swinnerton-Dyer
Sir Henry Peter Francis Swinnerton-Dyer, 16th Baronet, (2 August 1927 – 26 December 2018) was an English mathematician specialising in number theory at the University of Cambridge. As a mathematician he was best known for his part in the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture relating algebraic properties of elliptic curves to special values of L-functions, which was developed with Bryan Birch during the first half of the 1960s with the help of machine computation, and for his work on the Titan operating system. Biography Swinnerton-Dyer was the son of Sir Leonard Schroeder Swinnerton Dyer, 15th Baronet, and his wife Barbara, daughter of Hereward Brackenbury. In mathematics, the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture (often called the Birch–Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture) describes the set of rational solutions to equations defining an elliptic curve. It is an open problem in the field of number theory and is widely recognized as one of the most challenging mathematical problems. Henry Hurd Swinnerton
Henry Hurd Swinnerton (1875–1966) was a British geologist. He was professor of geology at University College Nottingham from 1910 to 1946. Swinnerton was educated at the Royal College of Science, and earned a doctorate in zoology (D.Sc.) from the University of London in July 1902. In the 1930s Swinnerton was a member of the Fenland Research Committee, contributing valuable knowledge of the geomorphology of the Lincolnshire coast. In 1937 he served as President of the Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union; he gave his Presidential address on "The Problem of the Lincoln Gap". Catherine Swinnerton (born 12 May 1958) is an English former racing cyclist. Born in Fenton, Staffordshire as one of seven children, Swinnerton is part of a cycling family, and founders of Swinnerton Cycles in Fenton. Career She competed in the road race at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where she finished 13th. She was twice British National Road Race Champion, winning in 1977 and 1984. Frank Arthur Swinnerton (12 August 1884 – 6 November 1982) was an English novelist, critic, biographer and essayist. The Pilkington, later Milborne-Swinnerton-Pilkington Baronetcy, of Stanley in the County of York, is a title in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia. Jane Swinnerton (born 7 May 1954) is a former British field hockey player who won over 100 caps for England between 1977 and 1987. Swinnerton tied for the most goals scored in the 1991/92 season. She played most of her career with Sutton Coldfield Hockey Club. Arguably the greatest highlight of her club career was part of the Sutton Coldfield team that won the European championships in Vught, Holland in 1992. She was selected for two Olympic squads '80 & '84 but never made it as political reasons meant certain teams were not allowed to travel in those years.
