Swimming At The 2012 Summer Olympics – Women's 400 Metre Individual Medley
The women's 400 metre individual medley event at the 2012 Summer Olympics took place on 28 July at the London Aquatics Centre in London, United Kingdom. At only 16 years of age, China's Ye Shiwen blasted a new world record to capture the Olympic title in the event. She trailed behind American teenager Elizabeth Beisel more than halfway through the race, before pulling away with a superb freestyle leg to bring home the Olympic gold medal and the world record in a sterling time of 4:28.43. Her spectacular swim also demolished the previous standard from Australia's Stephanie Rice in Beijing four years earlier by more than a second. Meanwhile, Beisel enjoyed the race with a powerful lead on the breaststroke leg, but felt satisfied to claim the silver in 4:31.27. London Aquatics Centre
The London Aquatics Centre is an indoor facility with two swimming pools and a diving pool in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London. The centre, designed by architect Zaha Hadid as one of the main venues of the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics, was used for the swimming, diving and synchronised swimming events. After significant modification, the centre opened to the public in March 2014. Caitlin Leverenz Smith (born February 26, 1991) is an American competition swimmer who specializes in breaststroke and medley events. She won the bronze medal in the 200-meter individual medley event at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Early years Leverenz was born in Tucson, Arizona. She attended Sahuaro High School in Tucson and was a member of the Sahauro Cougars High School swim team. She was one of the top college swimming recruits in the nation as a high school senior. Blair Catherine Evans (born 3 April 1991) is an Australian middle distance freestyle swimmer. Career Evans made her international debut for Australia at the 2009 World Aquatics Championships where she competed in the 800-metre freestyle, after winning her first senior national title in that event in that year. She represented Australia at the 2010 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, where she took bronze in the 200-metre and 400-metre freestyle, and silver in the 4×200-metre freestyle.
