Swimming At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's 200 Metre Butterfly
The men's 200 metre butterfly event at the 2008 Olympic Games took place on 11–13 August at the Beijing National Aquatics Center in Beijing, China. U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps blasted a new world record of 1:52.03 to defend his title in the event, and more importantly, claim his fourth Olympic gold, tenth career, and twelfth overall medal. During the final, Phelps' goggles filled with water, which prevented him from seeing anything, while he was finishing the second lap. Hungary's László Cseh added a second silver to his hardware from the 400 m individual medley, breaking a European record of 1:52.70. Japan's Takeshi Matsuda powered home with a bronze medal in 1:52.97. Beijing National Aquatics Center
The National Aquatics Centre (), and colloquially known as the Water Cube () and the Ice Cube (), is an aquatics center at the Olympic Green in Beijing, China. The facility was originally constructed to host the aquatics competitions at the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. During the Olympics — where it hosted diving, swimming and synchronized swimming events — 25 world records were broken in swimming. In July 2010, a renovation of the facility was completed, which included the addition of a public water park. Serhiy Mykolaiovych Advena ( uk, Сергій Миколайович Адвена; born August 4, 1984) is a Ukrainian former swimmer who specializes in the freestyle and butterfly swimming styles. Gil Stovall
William Gilbert Stovall, V (born June 3, 1986) is an American former competition swimmer who represented the United States at the 2008 Olympic Games. Stovall placed second in his signature event, the 200-meter butterfly, at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, with a career-best time of 1:53.86, which earned him a place on the U.S. Olympic team. At that time, Stovall was the second-fastest swimmer ever in that event, behind only Michael Phelps. Stovall swam competitively for the University of Georgia from 2004 to 2008. In his final season at Georgia, he broke Melvin Stewart's 17-year-old NCAA record in the 200-yard butterfly at the NCAA Men's Swimming Championships, winning the title.
