Swimming At The 1952 Summer Olympics – Men's 100 Metre Freestyle
The men's 100 metre freestyle event at the 1952 Summer Olympics took place between 26 and 27 July at the Helsinki Swimming Stadium. There were 61 competitors from 33 nations. Nations had been limited to three swimmers each since the 1924 Games. The event was won by Clarke Scholes of the United States, the nation's second consecutive and seventh overall victory in the men's 100 metre freestyle (most of any nation). Japan, absent from the 1948 Games after World War II, returned to the podium in the event with Hiroshi Suzuki's silver. Göran Larsson earned Sweden's first medal in the event since 1908 with his bronze. Background This was the 11th appearance of the men's 100 metre freestyle. The event has been held at every Summer Olympics except 1900 (when the shortest freestyle was the 200 metres), though the 1904 version was measured in yards rather than metres. Helsinki Swimming Stadium
Helsinki Swimming Stadium is an outdoor swimming venue in Helsinki, Finland, located in the Eläintarha area to the northeast of the Helsinki Olympic Stadium. History The Swimming Stadium was designed by architect Jorma Järvi in the Functionalist style prevalent during the 1930s. The stadium was built for the 1940 Olympic Games which were cancelled due to World War II, but later hosted the 1952 Summer Olympics. Because of the war, the construction of the Swimming Stadium took a long time, and it was finally completed in 1947. In wartime, the finished pools were used to store herring and root vegetables. According to the International Swimming Federation, the water temperature in the pool needs to be at least 22 °C, nowadays 27 °C. The machinery to heat the outdoor pool was ordered from abroad, and the ship transporting them was sunk immediately after the war broke out. John Caldwell "Jack" Wardrop (born 26 May 1932) is a male former competitive swimmer who represented Great Britain and Scotland. Swimming career While Wardrop was competing for Scotland, Wardrop won a silver and bronze medal at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver. Lev Nikolayevich Balandin (russian: Лев Николаевич Баландин; 1934–1980) was a Soviet swimmer who won two medals at the 1954 European Aquatics Championships. He also competed at the 1952 and 1956 Summer Olympics in three freestyle events, but was eliminated in prelinaries. During his career he set four world records and seven European records in relay events. He also won 10 national titles in the 4 × 200 m freestyle (1951–1954), 4 × 100 m medley (1953–1955) and 100 m freestyle (1954–1956).
