Swimming At The 2019 World Aquatics Championships – Men's 100 Metre Backstroke
The Men's 100 metre backstroke competition at the Swimming at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships, 2019 World Championships was held on 22 and 23 July 2019. The defending champion was Xu Jiayu, and he successfully defended his title. Jiayu set a competition record in the semifinals by winning his semifinal in 52.17 seconds. Records Prior to the competition, the existing world and championship records were as follows. The following new records were set during this competition. Results Heats The heats were held on 22 July at 10:20. Due to backstroke wedge malfunctions, Simone Sabbioni and Dylan Carter swam alone in new series, after the end of the normal series, and both achieved classification. The swimmers who had obtained the vacancy, and would be disqualified after these 2 series (Thomas Ceccon and Richárd Bohus), received extra vacancies for the semifinal, that ended up being with 18 swimmers. Guilherme Augusto Guido (born 12 February 1987) is a Brazilian backstroke swimmer who specializes in sprint events. He was twice a finalist in the 100 metre backstroke at World Championships When Guido was young, he was a big rival of César Cielo. In the tournaments in the region of Campinas, Guido used to beat Cielo in freestyle, while Cielo won the backstroke, until the age of 15 when Cielo decided to dedicate himself to freestyle, and the situation was reversed. Guilherme Guido focused on backstroke, and today both he and Cielo are great Brazilian and South American swimmers. Dylan Carter (born 30 January 1996) is a Trinidad and Tobago competitive swimmer. He is the Trinidad and Tobago record holder in the long course and short course 100 metre freestyle, 50 metre backstroke, 100 metre backstroke, 50 metre butterfly, and 100 metre butterfly. At the 2021 World Short Course Championships, he became the first swimmer representing Trinidad and Tobago to win a silver medal a World Short Course Championships, winning the silver medal in the 50 metre butterfly. Luke Greenbank (born 17 September 1997) is an English professional swimmer who specialises in backstroke. A medalist in the 200 metre backstroke at the Olympic Games and the World and European championships, he also swam the first leg in the 2019 World and 2020 European Championship gold medal-winning Great Britain medley relay teams. Kliment Andreyevich Kolesnikov ( rus, Климент Андреевич Колесников, , klʲɪˈmʲent kɐˈlʲesʲnʲɪkəf; born 9 July 2000) is a Russian swimmer. He holds world junior records in eight events: 50/100/200 back in long course, as well as 200 free, 50/100/200 back and 100 IM in short course. Markus Thormeyer (born August 25, 1997) is a Canadian competitive swimmer who specializes in freestyle and backstroke. Originally from Delta, Thormeyer moved in 2015 to Vancouver, British Columbia after graduating high school to train with the High Performance Centre-Vancouver. While he swims he is also pursuing an undergraduate degree in environmental science at the University of British Columbia. Career Thormeyer began swimming at the age of 10 for the Markham Aquatic Club in Markham, Ontario but moved across the country to Delta, British Columbia shortly after he started. Daniel Cristian Martin (born 5 October 2000) is a Romanian competitive swimmer, who specialized in backstroke events. He collected a total of seven medals in a junior international tournament, spanning the Youth Olympic Games, the World Championships, the European Championships, and the European Youth Olympic Festival.
