Swimming At The 2015 Pan American Games – Men's 100 Metre Backstroke
The men's 100 metre backstroke competition of the swimming events at the 2015 Pan American Games took place on July 17 at the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House in Toronto, Canada. The defending Pan American Games champion was Thiago Pereira of Brazil. This race consisted of two lengths of the pool, both lengths in backstroke. The top eight swimmers from the heats would qualify for the A final (where the medals would be awarded), while the next best eight swimmers would qualify for the B final. Markus Thormeyer (born August 25, 1997) is a Canadian competitive swimmer who specializes in freestyle and backstroke. Originally from Delta, Thormeyer moved in 2015 to Vancouver, British Columbia after graduating high school to train with the High Performance Centre-Vancouver. While he swims he is also pursuing an undergraduate degree in environmental science at the University of British Columbia. Career Thormeyer began swimming at the age of 10 for the Markham Aquatic Club in Markham, Ontario but moved across the country to Delta, British Columbia shortly after he started. Albert Subirats Altes (born September 25, 1986) is an Olympic and national record holding swimmer from Venezuela. He represented his homeland at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics. At the 2007 World Championships, Subirats won Venezuela's first (long course) World Championships medal. Collegiately, he attended the University of Arizona in the United States, where he swam for the Arizona Wildcats swimming and diving team from 2004 to 2007. Omar Andrés Pinzón García (born June 17, 1989) is a competitive swimmer who represented Colombia at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece and 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. Pinzón attended college in the United States, where he swam for the University of Florida. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Pinzón finished in thirty-fifth place in the men's 200-meter backstroke. Federico Grabich (born 26 March 1990) is an Argentine competitive swimmer. In August 2015, Grabich won the bronze medal at the World Championships, being the first medal for his country in a World Championship and the silver medal at the 2015 World Cup in Qatar. At the 2012 Summer Olympics he finished 41st overall in the heats in the Men's 100 metre backstroke and failed to reach the semifinals. He finished in 35th place in the men's 50 metre freestyle.
