Swimming At The 2004 Summer Olympics – Men's 100 Metre Breaststroke
The men's 100 metre breaststroke event at the 2004 Summer Olympics was contested at the Olympic Aquatic Centre of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex in Athens, Greece on August 14 and 15. After finishing fourth in Sydney (2000), Japan's Kosuke Kitajima edged out U.S. swimmer and world-record holder Brendan Hansen to claim the gold medal by 0.17 of a second, in a time of 1:00.08. Katajima used an illegal dolphin kick during a pull-out, however he was not disqualified, and the rules were changed less than a year later to allow for a single dolphin kick after the start and after each wall. Hansen, who turned 23 on the final day, earned a silver in 1:00.25, while France's Hugues Duboscq held off onrushing American Mark Gangloff to take the bronze in 1:00.88. Earlier in the semifinals Hansen lowered an Olympic record to 1:00.01 that had been set by his archrival Kitajima in the preliminaries by just 0.02 of a second. Athens Olympic Aquatic Centre
The Athens Olympic Aquatic Centre is a complex at the Athens Olympic Sports Complex, consisting of two outdoor pools and one indoor pool, that was built for the 1991 Mediterranean Games. It was refurbished and expanded for the 2004 Summer Olympics. The larger of the outdoor pools, which seats 11,500 spectators, hosted Swimming at the 2004 Summer Olympics, swimming and Water Polo at the 2004 Summer Olympics, water polo events. The smaller pool, which hosted Synchronized Swimming at the 2004 Summer Olympics, synchronized swimming, sat 5,300 fans. The indoor pool, which hosted the Diving at the 2004 Summer Olympics, diving events, sat 6,200 observers. It is used for swimming, too. Thijs Maarten van Valkengoed (born 6 July 1983 in Lelystad) is a breaststroke swimmer from the Netherlands, who competed for his native country at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece and the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Eduardo Aquiles Fischer (born March 25, 1980 in Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brazil) is an Olympic breaststroke swimmer from Brazil. He swam for Brazil at the 2000 and 2004 Olympics. Oleh Lisohor (born 17 January 1979 in Brovary, Kyiv Oblast, Soviet Union) is a Ukrainian swimmer. Career Lisohor is the former world record holder in the 50 metres breaststroke, long course, with 27.18 seconds. The record was set in Berlin on 2 August 2002. James Gibson, MBE is an English former competitive swimmer and breaststroke who represented Great Britain in the Olympics, FINA world championships and European championships, and England in the Commonwealth Games.
