The Swimming competition at the 14th Pan American Games was held August 12–18, 2003 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The competition was held in the outdoor (50m) pool of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center. It featured 32 long course (50m) events (equally split between men and women). George Gleason
George Gleason (born August 8, 1979) is a former swimmer from the U.S. Virgin Islands, who specialized in freestyle and backstroke events. He is a two-time Olympian (2000 and 2004), a swimming captain for the Yale Bulldogs, and a graduate of sociology (2001) at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Gleason also capped his swimming career by an eleventh-place finish in the 200 m backstroke at the NCAA Swimming Championships in College Station, Texas, earning him All-American honors. Career Gleason made his official debut, as U.S. Virgin Islands' only swimmer, at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Javier Díaz González (born September 13, 1979) is a Mexican former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle and individual medley events. He is a two-time Olympian (2000 and 2004), and a former Mexican record holder in the 50, 100, and 200 m freestyle. Diaz also attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, where he majored in economics, and played for the Purdue Boilermakers. Diaz made his Olympic debut as a 21-year-old native from Mexico at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. He failed to reach the top 16 in any of his individual events, finishing thirtieth in the 200 m freestyle (1:53.30), and thirty-seventh in the 200 m individual medley (2:07.28). Howard Xavier Hinds (born October 29, 1977) is a Curaçao former swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle and butterfly events. He is a two-time Olympian (1996 and 2000), and a member of the Fort Lauderdale Swim Team, under head coach Jack Nelson. Hinds made his official debut for the Netherlands Antilles at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. He failed to reach the top 16 final in the 50 m freestyle, finishing only in fifty-fourth place at 24.63. At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Hinds competed only in a sprint freestyle double.
