Swimming At The 1976 Summer Olympics – Men's 200 Metre Backstroke
The men's 200 metre backstroke event for the 1976 Summer Olympics was held in Montreal. The event took place on 24 July. There were 33 competitors from 23 nations, with each nation having up to 3 swimmers. The event was won by John Naber of the United States in world-record time; he was the first person to swim the event in under 2 minutes (1:59.19). It was Naber's fifth medal (fourth gold) of the Games: completing a double in the backstroke events as well as golds in the medley relay and the 4×200 free relay, along with a silver in the 200 free. It was the second American victory and second American medal sweep in the men's 200 metre backstroke, after 1968; of the 12 medals from 1968 through 1976, 10 were won by Americans and the other two (both gold) by Roland Matthes. Olympic Pool, Montreal
The Montreal Olympic Pool was constructed for the 1976 Summer Olympics as part of the Montreal Olympic Park. The Olympic Pool is part of the larger swimming centre, located in the base of the inclined Montreal Tower. The centre has a spectator capacity of 3,012 seats. At the 1976 Olympics, the venue hosted swimming, diving, water polo, and the swimming part of the modern pentathlon events. It had a capacity of 10,000 seats at the time (6,988 temporary seats were installed). The building was designed by French architect Roger Taillibert, who also designed the Olympic Stadium and Olympic Village. The structure, along with the accompanying velodrome, inspired Taillibert's later designs for Luxembourg's National Sports and Culture Centre. Lutz Wanja
Lutz Wanja (born 6 June 1956) is a retired German backstroke swimmer who won a bronze medal at the 1973 World Aquatics Championships. He also won three medals at LEN European Aquatics Championships in 1974 and 1977. He competed at the 1972 and 1976 Summer Olympics in the 100 m and 200 m backstroke with the best achievement of fifth place in the 100 m backstroke in 1976. After retirement, Wanja worked as a swimming coach and was involved in the East German doping program. In particular, Jörg Hoffmann admitted in 1988 that Wanja gave him the anabolic steroid Oral-Turinabol. Miloslav Roľko
Miloslav Rolko (born 13 October 1960) is a Slovak former swimmer who swam for Czechoslovakia at the 1976 and 1980 Olympics. At the 1977 European Championships, he won the 100 backstroke, and finished second in the 200 back. In 1982 Rolko, along with fellow swimmers Vlastimil Černý, Tereza Vrtiskova and Josef Kuf, defected from Czechoslovakia following a meet in Sindelfingen, West Germany.
