Swimming At The 1960 Summer Paralympics
Swimming at the 1960 Summer Paralympics consisted of 62 events, 32 for men and 30 for women. Each race had no more than three competitors so every swimmer completing a race was guaranteed a medal. All the swimmers successfully completed their races, and every swimmer at the Games therefore earned a medal. Paralympic Swimming
Para swimming is an adaptation of the sport of swimming for athletes with disabilities. Para swimmers compete at the Summer Paralympic Games and at other sports competitions throughout the world. The sport is governed by the International Paralympic Committee. Both men and women compete in para swimming, racing against competitors of their own gender. Swimming has been a part of the Paralympic program since the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy. Rules Rules for the sport are adapted from those set forth by the International Swimming Federation (FINA). Swimmers compete individually in backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle, individual medley, and as teams in relay races. At the Paralympics, World Championships and other elite level competitions, swimmers compete in an Olympic-size swimming pool. Israel Globus ( he, ישראל גלובוס; 1942–1992) was an Israeli paralympic competitor in wheelchair basketball and para swimming who took part in the Summer Paralympic Games from 1960 to 1976. From 1979 to 1992 he was the Registrar of Companies in the Ministry of Justice. Biography Globus was affected by polio at age 14. After completing his law studies in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem he began working for the Ministry of Justice. In 1974 Globus was in charge of the computerization of the Registrar of Companies Unit. In 1979 he was appointed as the Registrar, a position he held until his death in 1992. For some time he was also the Registrar of Patents. As a Paralympic competitor Globus took part in the 1960 Summer Paralympics as a swimmer and achieved third place in the 50 metre backstroke event for class 4 swimmers. James Peter Stanton (born 23 April 1940) is an Australian landscape ecologist, fire ecologist, botanist and biogeographer who individually conducted systematic environmental resource surveys throughout Queensland whilst working for the National Parks department of Forestry (Qld.) from 1967–1974.
