Swifts Football Club were a football team based in Slough, England. History The club was founded in 1869 by Mr W. Mansfield Gardner, Mr R.T. Smith, and Mr F. Mitchell, of Slough, who also formed the Uxbridge club two years later. The club played home matches on a ground near The Dolphin public house, Slough. The Swifts club was originally a rugby union club but by 1873 had changed to the association code. During the late-19th century the club produced several England players, most notable of whom was Charles Bambridge who made 18 appearances for the national team. In 1873 the club inflicted a record home defeat on the Wanderers, beating a depleted side 5-0 at the Kennington Oval. FA Cup The club had some success in the FA Cup, reaching the semi-finals in 1874, 1876 and 1886. A football team is a group of players selected to play together in the various team sports known as football. Arthur Bambridge
Arthur Leopold Bambridge (16 June 1861 – 27 November 1923) was an English footballer who made three appearances either as a full back or as a right winger for England between 1881 and 1884. He was one of three brothers who played for England. Career Arthur Bambridge was born in Windsor, Berkshire, the sixth child of Sophia (née Thorington) and William Samuel Bambridge, who had been a missionary in Waimate, New Zealand, and was then the photographer to Queen Victoria. He was educated at St Mark's School in Windsor. His football career was spent with Windsor, Upton Park, Swifts, Clapham Rovers and Corinthian and he gained representative honours for Berkshire. The Philberds
The Philberds was a preparatory school based in a house in Holyport, near Maidenhead, Berkshire, on the site of one which Charles II had given to Nell Gwyn. The name derives from a family which owned land in the area in mediaeval times. School founder Edward Henry Price Edward Henry Price (1822–1898) was educated at Rugby School under Thomas Arnold, arriving in May 1835 aged 13. He matriculated at St John's College, Cambridge in 1841, graduating B.A. in 1845, M.A. in 1863. Ordained deacon in 1845 and priest in 1846, Price spent the years 1845 to 1853 at Lutterworth as a curate. He founded The Philberds in 1862, having previously founded a school at Tarvin in Cheshire which he moved to become Mostyn House School, in Cheshire, in 1855. In 1862 he sold Mostyn House School to Algernon Sydney Grenfell. Price was headmaster of The Philberds from 1862 until 1879. The initial school fee was 80 guineas per annum. The Berks & Bucks FA County Senior Cup is the Senior County Cup competition of the Berks & Bucks FA, which first took place in 1878–79 – a time when the FA Cup had only been going for seven years, there was no Football League, and most countries in the world did not have any football competitions at all. Originally known as the ''Berks & Bucks Challenge Cup'', the competition started in the first season of the Association's existence. London Charity Cup
The London Charity Cup was one of the London Football Association's cup competitions. History The London FA previously ran three senior cup competitions, the London Challenge Cup, the London Senior Cup (known also as the London Senior Amateur Cup) and the London Charity Cup. The only time a club reached the final of all three competitions in the same season was in 1959–60. Tooting & Mitcham won the London Senior Cup after defeating Bromley 5–0 in the final played at The Den (home of Millwall). Tooting & Mitcham were losing finalists in the other two competitions after being beaten 2–1 by Barnet in the final of the London Charity Cup and 2–1 by Chelsea in the final of the London Challenge Cup. Andrew Watson (footballer, Born 1856)
Andrew Watson (24 May 1856 – 8 March 1921) was a Scottish footballer who is widely considered to be the first black person to play association football at international level. He played three matches for Scotland between 1881 and 1882. Arthur Wharton was previously commonly thought to be the first black player, as he was the first black professional footballer to play in the Football League, but Watson's career predated him by over a decade. There is evidence that Watson was paid professionally when at Bootle in 1887, two years prior to Wharton becoming a professional with Rotherham Town; however, the Merseyside club did not play in the Football League at the time Watson played there. William Rose (footballer)
William Crisp Rose (1 December 1861 – 2 February 1937) was an English international footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Early and personal life Born in Euston, Middlesex, Rose was the eldest of three sons; their father was a carpenter, a trade which Rose also later practiced. The family later moved to Aston in Birmingham. He married in August 1886; his wife died by the end of the year. He had a second marriage in September 1896, and four children. Career Rose began his career with Small Heath, Swindon Town, Swifts, Swindon Victoria, Corinthian, Preston North End, Warwick County, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Loughborough Town. Francis William Pawson (6 April 1861 – 4 July 1921) was an English footballer who earned two caps for the national team between 1883 and 1885, scoring one goal.
