Photographer and writer Benjamin Swett was born on March 3, 1959, in Washington, D.C. Educated at Andover and Harvard University, he worked for a number of years for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, where he photographed and wrote about neighborhood parks around the city. His first publication, ''Great Trees of New York City: A Guide'', was for the Parks Department. His subsequent works have all featured text and photographs. ''Route 22'' (2007) is a narrative history of the state highway that stretches from the Bowery in New York to the Canadian border near Montreal. This book, along with ''The Hudson Valley: A Cultural Guide'' (2009), and ''New York City of Trees'' (2013), were all published by Quantuck Lane Press. John Swett (July 31, 1830 – August 22, 1913) is considered to be the "Father of the California public school" system and the "Horace Mann of the Pacific". Biography John Swett was an only child born July 31, 1830 in Pittsfield, New Hampshire, to Lucretia (born French) Swett and Ebenezer Swett, who were Congregationalists. He died August 22, 1913 in Alhambra Valley, near Martinez, California. He married Mary Louise (Tracy) Swett on May 8, 1862 in Sonoma, and they had 6 children. During his life he was a close friend of Sierra Club co-founder John Muir. Swett arrived in California in 1853 to mine gold but quickly sought work as a teacher in San Francisco. In 1862 he became a Freemason, joining San Francisco's Phoenix Lodge No. 144. John Swett High School is located in Crockett, California, United States. It serves the communities of Crockett, Port Costa, Rodeo, and the Foxboro area of Hercules. It is named after John Swett, former California Superintendent of Public Instruction, elected in 1863. John Swett High School was established in 1927. The school remains in its original building complex, which was extensively renovated five years after original construction for seismic retrofitting at a cost of two-thirds of the original cost of the complex. John Swett High School is part of the John Swett Unified School District. The school's Indian mascot was dropped by a vote of the School District Board in February 2015. Jorge Swett Palomeque (February 6, 1926 – February 24, 2012) was an Ecuadorian muralist, painter, lawyer and writer. He was born and died in Guayaquil, Ecuador. He created more than 100 murals during his lifetime, many of which can be seen in buildings throughout his hometown, such as the Municipal Museum of Guayaquil, the Social Security Fund Building, the old Simon Bolivar Airport, the Children's Hospital, the Catholic University of Santiago of Guayaquil, Ecuavisa, among others. Yvonne Katrina Swett (née Lantos; born October 8, 1955) is the President of the Lantos Foundation. She is also an American educator and the former chair of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom from 2012 to 2013, and then in 2014 to 2015. Leonard Swett (August 11, 1825 – June 8, 1889) was a civil and criminal lawyer who advised and assisted Abraham Lincoln throughout the president's political career. Early life Swett was born in 1825 near Turner, Maine and educated at North Yarmouth Academy and Colby College, although he did not earn a degree. Swett read law in Portland, Maine and enlisted in the army to serve in the Mexican-American War. After the war, he settled in Bloomington, Illinois. In 1865, he settled in Chicago.
