Swetman Island
Swetman Island, formerly False Duck Island, is a small Canadian island in Lake Ontario, south of Picton, Ontario. It is the largest island in a chain of islands and shoals known as the False Duck Islands, not to be confused with the nearby Main Duck Islands. Nearby Timber Island is also considered part of the False Duck Islands. The False Duck Islands, the Main Duck Islands, and Galloo Island and Stony Island on the US side, and their associated shoals, form the Duck Galloo Ridge. The first stone lighthouse on the island was built in 1829. A second, taller lighthouse, built from concrete, replaced the original lighthouse in 1865. It was changed to automated operation in 1989. Lake Ontario
Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. It is bounded on the north, west, and southwest by the Canadian province of Ontario, and on the south and east by the U.S. state of New York. The Canada–United States border spans the centre of the lake. Picton, Ontario
Picton is an unincorporated community located in Prince Edward County in southeastern Ontario, roughly east of Toronto. It is the county's largest community and former seat located at the southwestern end of Picton Bay, a branch of the Bay of Quinte, which is along the northern shoreline of Lake Ontario. The town is named for Lieutenant General Sir Thomas Picton, who served in the British Army during the Peninsular War in Spain and Portugal. He also saw action at the Battle of Waterloo, where he was killed. It was formerly incorporated as a town. Timber Island
Timber Island is a island in the east end of Lake Ontario, off Prince Edward County, Canada. It is part of a chain of islands and shoals, including Stoney Island, Galloo Island, Main Duck Island, Yorkshire Island and Swetman Island. Timber Island and Swetman Island, and their nearby shoals, are known as the False Duck Islands. The island used to be home to bald eagles. The island was donated to the province by its owner, Barbara Cody, in 1962. The island is currently part of the Sandbanks Provincial Park, visitors are allowed, after getting the permission of the park superintendent. Most of the island is covered by an oak-hickory forest. Plants rare to eastern Ontario are found on the island. The island provides a resting spot for birds on their annual migration. Duck Galloo Ridge
The Duck Galloo Ridge is a mainly underwater ridge, at the eastern end of Lake Ontario, spanning from Prince Edward County, Ontario to Jefferson County, New York. In pre-Columbian times native people used the islands on the ridge as way stations, when crossing the lake.
