Swells Cove
Swells Cove (formerly Seals Cove) was a small community in Newfoundland and Labrador. It is located near Ship Harbour, Placentia Bay, and is accessible from Ship Harbour through "The American Road". History Fisherman from Iona, Argentia, and Ship Harbour and surrounding areas for many years in the 1800s used the Cove for fishing purposes. Until it was settled by the Griffin Families from Iona in the early 1900s. In 1921 Census of Newfoundland there were 9 people in 2 Households in the Cove. One family lived in "The Hole" and the other on the far right side beneath a small cliff. In the late 1920s, the family that had lived in "The Hole" had moved to Ship Harbour. By then 1 person had died in the other household and another had moved, and only a man named John Griffin remained. Argentia Naval Base
Naval Station Argentia is a former base of the United States Navy that operated from 1941 to 1994. It was established in the community of Argentia in what was then the Dominion of Newfoundland, which later became the tenth Canadian province, Newfoundland and Labrador. Argentia, Newfoundland And Labrador
Argentia ( ) is a Canadian commercial seaport and industrial park located in the Town of Placentia, Newfoundland and Labrador. It is situated on the southwest coast of the Avalon Peninsula and defined by a triangular shaped headland which reaches northward out into Placentia Bay creating a natural harbour in length. Originally settled by the French in the 1630s that fishing settlement was called Petit Plaisance, meaning "Pleasant Little Place". The name was retained in English (Little Placentia) when the French lost control of the area following the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. The census of 1706 records 149 individuals in 14 habitations. Ship Harbour is a community in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada located on the eastern shore of Placentia Bay. Area code 709 is the telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the entire Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. History The first telephone system was installed in Newfoundland in 1885, but domestic long-distance calls within the Dominion of Newfoundland could be placed on a limited basis only in 1921. The first long-distance call from Newfoundland to Canada was made on January 10, 1939, by using a shortwave radio link operated by the Canadian Marconi Company in Montréal. Shortwave radio also carried calls from St. John's to London, England. When planning was completed for the original NANP area codes in 1947, Newfoundland had not yet become of part of the Dominion of Canada.
