''Sweet Country'' is the sixteenth studio album by American country music artist Charley Pride. It was released in 1973 on the RCA Victor label (catalog no. APL1-0217). The album debuted on the '' Billboard'' magazine's country album chart on June 23, 1973, peaked at the No. 3, and remained on the chart for a total of 39 weeks. The album also included the No. 1 hit singles: " Don't Fight the Feelings of Love" and " A Shoulder to Cry On". Charley Frank Pride (March 18, 1934 – December 12, 2020) was an American singer, guitarist, and professional baseball player. His greatest musical success came in the early to mid-1970s, when he was the best-selling performer for RCA Records since Elvis Presley. During the peak years of his recording career (1966–1987), he had 52 top-10 hits on the '' Billboard'' Hot Country Songs chart, 30 of which made it to number one. He won the Entertainer of the Year award at the Country Music Association Awards in 1971 and was awarded a Grammy for “Best Country Vocal Performance, Male” in 1972. Pride is one of three African-American members of the Grand Ole Opry (the others being DeFord Bailey and Darius Rucker). He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000. Merle Ronald Haggard (April 6, 1937 – April 6, 2016) was an American country music singer, songwriter, guitarist, and fiddler. Haggard was born in Oildale, California, toward the end of the Great Depression. His childhood was troubled after the death of his father, and he was incarcerated several times in his youth. After being released from San Quentin State Prison in 1960, he managed to turn his life around and launch a successful country music career. He gained popularity with his songs about the working class that occasionally contained themes contrary to anti–Vietnam War sentiment of some popular music of the time. It was originally recorded and released as a single by American country and Latin singer Johnny Rodriguez. His version of the song became a top ten in North America. In 1980, it was released as a single by American country artist Janie Fricke, whose version reached the top 40 in North America. Background and recording Johnny Rodriguez was discovered in Texas by Bobby Bare and Tom T. Hall. "The Shelter of Your Eyes" is a song written and recorded by American country music artist Don Williams. It was released in December 1972 as his debut single and the first from his album '' Don Williams Volume One''. The single release would be the first commercial single released by 1970s country star Don Williams, and it would be a number twelve country chart hit. Williams was signed to Jack Clements' J-M-I Records and Jack Music, Inc in 1972 by Allen Reynolds, and Reynolds would go on to produce Williams' entire debut album.
