The Swedish Air Force Volunteers Association ( sv, Flygvapenfrivilligas riksförbund, FVRF), commonly known as the Air Force Volunteers ( sv, Flygvapenfrivilliga) is a Swedish voluntary defence organization formed in 1962 for both men and women according to the ordinance on voluntary defence activities - whose activities are to serve the Swedish Armed Forces and society's other crisis preparedness. It includes i.a. defence information as well as recruitment and training of voluntary defence organization personnel and youths. History Today's association was established in 1962 through the Swedish Association of Voluntary Observers (''Svenska Luftbevakningsförbundet'', SLBF) which formed in 1955. During the 1950s, the Swedish Air Force was expanded and there was a need for volunteers also in the air base service. Swedish Armed Forces
The Swedish Armed Forces ( sv, Försvarsmakten, "the Defense Force") is the government agency that forms the armed forces of Sweden, tasked with the defense of the country as well as with promoting Sweden's wider interests, supporting international peacekeeping, and providing humanitarian aid. It consists of the Swedish Army, the Swedish Air Force and the Swedish Navy, as well as a military reserve force, the Home Guard. Since 1994, all Swedish military branches are organized within a single unified government agency, headed by the Supreme Commander, even though the individual services maintain their distinct identities. The Swedish Air Force ( sv, Svenska flygvapnet or just ) is the air force branch of the Swedish Armed Forces. History The Swedish Air Force was created on 1 July, 1926 when the aircraft units of the Army and Navy were merged. Because of the escalating international tension during the 1930s the Air Force was reorganized and expanded from four to seven squadrons. World War II When World War II broke out in 1939 further expansion was initiated and this substantial expansion was not finished until the end of the war. Although Sweden never entered the war, a large air force was considered necessary to ward off the threat of invasion and to resist pressure through military threats from the great powers. Home Guard (Sweden)
The Home Guard – National Security Forces ( sv, Hemvärnet – Nationella skyddsstyrkorna) is a military reserve force of the Swedish Armed Forces. It was formally established on May 29, 1940, during World War II upon popular demand. While originally composed of former militia groups, today it comprises half of the Swedish Army, thus constituting the basis of the territorial defence of Sweden. The Home Guard consists mainly of local rapid response units, numbering 17,000 of the 22,000 total Home Guard strength, organised in 40 battalions, with 23 associated auxiliary defence organisations. Most soldiers maintain a civilian job while serving the army part-time. Rapid response units were formed in the early 2000s in parallel to the Swedish government's abolishment of conscription to the Swedish Armed Forces; small-scale conscription has since been reintroduced. Its awarded in recognition of efforts that have benefited the FVRF or its interests. History The Swedish Air Force Volunteers Association Merit Badge was established in 1986. The merit badge was awarded for the first time at FVRF's 25th anniversary at the meeting in Linköping on 24–25 January 1987 by the chairman Gunnar Löfström.
