Charles Swayne
Charles Swayne (August 10, 1842 – July 5, 1907) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida who prevailed over an impeachment effort. Education and career Born in Guyencourt, Delaware, Swayne received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1871. He was in private practice in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1871 to 1885, and in Pensacola, Florida from 1885 to 1889. In 1888, he was an unsuccessful Republican candidate for the Florida Supreme Court. Federal judicial service Swayne received a recess appointment from President Benjamin Harrison on May 17, 1889, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida vacated by Judge Thomas Settle. Noah Haynes Swayne
Noah Haynes Swayne (December 7, 1804 – June 8, 1884) was an American jurist and politician. He was the first Republican appointed as a justice to the United States Supreme Court. Birth and early life Swayne was born in Frederick County, Virginia in the uppermost reaches of the Shenandoah Valley, approximately northwest of Washington D.C. He was the youngest of nine children of Joshua Swayne and Rebecca (Smith) Swayne. He was a descendant of Francis Swayne, who emigrated from England in 1710 and settled near Philadelphia. After his father died in 1809, Noah was educated locally until enrolling in Jacob Mendendhall's Academy in Waterford, Virginia, a respected Quaker school 1817–18. He began to study medicine in Alexandria, Virginia, but abandoned this pursuit after his teacher Dr. George Thornton died in 1819. Sweyn Forkbeard ( non, Sveinn Haraldsson tjúguskegg ; da, Svend Tveskæg; 17 April 963 – 3 February 1014) was King of Denmark from 986 to 1014, also at times King of the English and King of Norway. He was the father of King Harald II of Denmark, King Cnut the Great, and Queen Estrid Svendsdatter. In the mid-980s, Sweyn revolted against his father, Harald Bluetooth, and seized the throne. Harald was driven into exile and died shortly afterwards in November 986 or 987. In 1000, with the allegiance of Eric, Earl of Lade, Sweyn ruled most of Norway. In 1013, shortly before his death, he became the first Danish king of the English after a long effort. William Marshall Swayne (December 1, 1828 – May 1, 1918) was a sculptor and writer who lived in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Thomas Swayne (dates of birth and death unknown) was a noted professional cricketer who played for Surrey in the 1770s. Depending on his age, it is assumed that most of his career took place before cricket's ''statistical record'' began with regular scorecards in 1772. He made 3 known appearances in first-class cricket matches between 1775 and 1778, but it is believed he was playing much earlier as he had become the landlord of the ''White Hart'' at Chertsey by 1773. The vocation of pub landlord was a common career option for players at the end of their playing days. Steven R. Swayne is a professor of music and currently music department chair at Dartmouth College. He has authored a study of the music of American musical theater composer Stephen Sondheim and a biography of American composer and educator William Schuman. Swayne is a native of Los Angeles, California and is a graduate of John Muir High School and Occidental College. He has graduate degrees from Fuller Theological Seminary (M.Div.) and the University of California, Berkeley (MA, Ph.D.). He has taught at UC Berkeley and at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and he has worked as a pianist at Nordstrom. Charles Richard Swayne (1843 - 1921), born in Dublin, was the first Resident Commissioner of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands protectorate, from 1892 to 1895. Swayne had spent more than 20 years as a Magistrate at Lomaloma and then in Lau in Fiji, before being seconded to the new two protectorates, where he spent the few years after. Sir John Bates Thurston, as High Commissioner for the Western Pacific, appointed his friend Swayne in 1892, as the first Resident Commissioner in those territories, initially only for the separate protectorate of the Ellice Islands, before extending one year later his mandate to the Gilbert Islands. Colonel Harald George Carlos Swayne (1860–1940) was a British soldier, explorer, naturalist and big game hunter, he was the older brother of Eric John Eagles Swayne. Military career Commissioned into the Royal Engineers and commencing his service in India, between 1884 and 1897 Swayne made a number of expeditions to Africa to make exploratory surveys for the British authorities. First travelling to Somaliland in January 1885 to hunt, Swayne made seventeen trips to Somaliland on leaves of absence from the Indian Army to conduct surveys, hunt and explore, making various notes on the local wildlife and inhabitants. In August 1885, the Indian Government sent Swayne to conduct a reconnaissance of Somaliland, a task that lasted until July 1887, the notes and maps he made during this period proved invaluable during the subsequent Somaliland Campaign.
