Swartz Creek is a city in Genesee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 5,758 at the 2010 census. The city is a suburb of Flint and has incorporated land formerly within Flint Charter Township, Gaines Township, and Clayton Township, but is administratively autonomous from all three. History Native Americans traveled the trail that paralleled the Swartz Creek to reach the maple trees, on what would later be the Crapo Farm, to fish, gather fruit, and hunt. This trail terminated in the Lansing area. Predecessor communities Miller's Settlement The Miller Settlement, and future core Swartz Creek community, was founded in June 1836 when it was first settled by Adam Miller, a German, and his family of eleven children in then Flint Township at its original size of 9 township survey areas. Swartz Creek Community Schools
Swartz Creek Community School District is a public school district in Genesee County in the U.S. state of Michigan and in the Genesee Intermediate School District. The School District serves the City of Swartz Creek, parts of Flint, Flint Charter Township, Gaines Township, Clayton Township, Argentine Township and Village of Lennon even over into Shiawassee County. History S.T. Crapo donated part of the Crapo Farm land $40,000 which the school district matched with a bond to build the Mary Crapo School, named in honor of former Michigan Governor Henry H. Crapo's wife, with construction begin in 1928 and opened in 1929. The building original held all grades including kindergarten. The first graduating class of 1930 had four students. With consolidation of a number of one room schoolhouse districts, Mary Crapo had a western wing added. West Second Street–Swartz Creek Bridge
The West Second Street–Swartz Creek Bridge in Flint, Michigan, carries West Second Street over Swartz Creek. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. History The West Second Street Bridge was engineered in 1919 by the Flint City Engineer's Office under a royalty agreement with Daniel B. Luten, where the bridge utilized Luten's patented arch design. The Illinois Bridge Company of Chicago, a licensee for Luten, provided design assistance. The city solicited bids to construct the bridge, and awarded the construction contract to Price Brothers Construction Company of Lansing, Michigan, which underbid the Illinois Bridge Company. Work started on the bridge in the summer of 1919, and was completed in early 1920. It has continued to carry vehicular traffic since.
