Swanbridge Railway Station
Swanbridge railway station was located on the now disused railway line between Penarth and Cadoxton, which closed in the 1960s. History and description Like the other stations on the branch, Swanbridge opened to cater to the large amounts of tourist traffic. It was downgraded to 'platform' status in 1906. It is referred to as Swanbridge Halt on a 1921 OS map. By the postwar years, traffic on the line beyond Penarth was in sharp decline, and the DMU sets which served the line in its last years rarely picked up or delivered more than a few passengers a day at Swanbridge. The platforms originally had shelters, though these were gone by the 1960s. There was also a wooden awning covering the walkway leading up to the platforms, which stayed in position long after the platform buildings had gone. The station closed in 1968. Sully ( cy, Sili) is a village in the community of Sully and Lavernock, in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, lying on the northern coast of the Bristol Channel, midway between the towns of Penarth and Barry and 7 miles (11.3 kilometres) southwest of the Welsh capital city of Cardiff. Etymology Bilingual road signs at either end of the village announce ''Sully'' and ''Sili''. Although both forms could be considered to have unfavourable connotations, only the Welsh name has been controversial, as some residents have expressed the view that it belittles the village. The origins of the name ''Sully'' / ''Sili'' are unclear, but the most likely explanation is that it is a Norman name, taken from the de Sully family who were in possession of the manor in the twelfth century. Taff Vale Railway
The Taff Vale Railway (TVR) was a standard gauge railway in South Wales, built by the Taff Vale Railway Company to serve the iron and coal industries around Merthyr Tydfil and to connect them with docks in Cardiff. It was opened in stages in 1840 and 1841. In the railway's first years, the coal mining industries expanded considerably and branches were soon opened in the Rhondda valleys and the Cynon Valley. The conveyance of coal for export and for transport away from South Wales began to dominate and the docks in Cardiff and the approach railway became extremely congested. Alternatives were sought and competing railway companies were encouraged to enter the trade. Great Western Railway
The Great Western Railway (GWR) was a British railway company that linked London with the southwest, west and West Midlands of England and most of Wales. It was founded in 1833, received its enabling Act of Parliament on 31 August 1835 and ran its first trains in 1838 with the initial route completed between London and Bristol in 1841. Lavernock railway station served the coastal village of Lavernock in South Wales South Wales ( cy, De Cymru) is a loosely defined region of Wales bordered by England to the east and mid Wales to the north. Generally considered to include the historic counties of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire, south Wales extends westwards ... until the 1960s. History The station was located on an embankment just south of the lane (Fort Road) leading to Lavernock Point and Marconi Holiday Village. It was about 280 metres north of the road leading to St Mary's Well Bay. It had two platforms linked by a metal footbridge, with a substantial stone building on the 'down' side, and a smaller wooden shelter on the other. The signal box opened in 1893. Sully Railway Station
Sully railway station served the village of Sully in the Vale of Glamorgan until the 1960s. History and description The station was opened by the Taff Vale Railway. In comparison with the lightly built stations elsewhere on the Cadoxton Branch, Sully was a substantial station, with two long platforms linked by a metal footbridge. Each platform has a building, a signal box and a large goods facility. The station was successful in its early years, used by large amounts of tourist traffic. The Cadoxton branch fell on leaner times in the mid-20th century. Sully closed to goods in 1963.
