The ''Swan River Guardian'' was a newspaper published in Perth, Western Australia from 1836 to 1838. History The ''Swan River Guardian'' was published from 6 October 1836 to 22 October 1838 in Perth. It was published weekly on a Thursday. From 1836 it was edited by William Nairne Clark and printed and published by Charles Bourne Sole; from 1838 it was edited, printed and published by Clark. A total of 64 issues were published. The other weekly newspaper that was being published at the same time in Perth was ''The Perth Gazette and Western Australian Journal'', which was established at the beginning of 1833. Perth
Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia. It is the fourth most populous city in Australia and Oceania, with a population of 2.1 million (80% of the state) living in Greater Perth in 2020. Perth is part of the South West Land Division of Western Australia, with most of the metropolitan area on the Swan Coastal Plain between the Indian Ocean and the Darling Scarp. The city has expanded outward from the original British settlements on the Swan River, upon which the city's central business district and port of Fremantle are situated. Perth is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people, where Aboriginal Australians have lived for at least 45,000 years. Captain James Stirling founded Perth in 1829 as the administrative centre of the Swan River Colony. State Library Of Western Australia
The State Library of Western Australia is a research, education, reference and public lending library located in the Perth Cultural Centre in Perth, Western Australia. It is a portfolio agency of the Western Australia Department of Culture and the Arts, and facilitated by the Library Board of Western Australia. The State Library has particular responsibility for collecting, preserving and digitising Western Australia's heritage materials. The Battye Library of West Australian History is the section of the Library dedicated to West Australian historical materials. William Nairne Clark
William Nairne Clark (1804–1854) was a public notary and publisher, active at the Swan River Colony and Tasmanian settlements founded in Australia. The son of Charles Clark of Princeland, he was born in Scotland at Coupar Angus, Perthshire, to Marjory, née Barclay. His great uncle, advocate and judge William Nairne (Lord Dunsinane), provided his early education at Dunsinnan House in Collace, and he studied law to become appointed a life long public notary. Amongst the recognition of his works and contributions, aside from the contemporary notability of his firsts in publishing and duelling, he is noted by Dominic Serventy and Hubert Whittell in the seminal work ''Birds of Western Australia'' (1948, ''et seq'') as having published observations on birds of Southwest Australia and the first list of its avifauna. ''The West Australian'' is the only locally edited daily newspaper published in Perth, Western Australia. It is owned by Seven West Media (SWM), as is the state's other major newspaper, ''The Sunday Times (Western Australia), The Sunday Times''. It is the second-oldest continuously produced newspaper in Australia, having been published since 1833. It tends to have conservative leanings, and has mostly supported the Coalition (Australia), Liberal–National Party Coalition.
