The Rural Municipality of Swan River is a former rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was originally incorporated as a rural municipality on May 1, 1901. It ceased on January 1, 2015 as a result of its provincially mandated amalgamation with the Village of Benito to form the Municipality of Swan Valley West. The former RM is located in the Parkland Region of the province, adjacent to the Province of Saskatchewan, and surrounds the Town of Swan River. It had a population of 2,784 in the 2006 census. The southernmost part of Manitoba's Porcupine Provincial Forest is located within the northern portion of the former RM. Swan River is a town in Manitoba, Canada. It is surrounded by the Municipality of Swan Valley West in the Swan River Valley region. According to the 2021 Canadian Census, Swan River had a population of 4,049, making it Manitoba's 18th largest in population. History Located in a valley between the Duck Mountains and the Porcupine Hills, the town of Swan River is close to the Saskatchewan boundary in west-central Manitoba. The town is situated along the Swan River which flows into Swan Lake, to the north-east. Swan Lake is believed to be named for trumpeter swans that once bred near the lake, but are now locally extirpated. Henry Kelsey became the first European explorer to visit the area in 1690. All eight people were transported to hospital. The crash was caused by the fueler mistakenly filling the plane with jet fuel, instead of the required Avgas. *In 2012, a Piper PA-31 carrying five passengers stalled on final approach and crashed near North Spirit Lake, Ontario due to adverse weather and icing conditions.
