Ann Swaine (<1821 – 21 June 1883) was a British writer and a suffragist concerned with improving the higher education of women. Life Swaine was born in Birstall in Yorkshire and she was baptised in 1821. She was the first child of Edward and Martha (born Sykes) Swaine. She was involved in her local school; the Unitarian Sunday School and she was the honorary secretary of the Yorkshire Ladies' Educational Association. This association was established in 1825 by women to support other women living in poor industrial conditions. The association was still in operation in 2017. Francis Swaine
Francis Swaine (1725–1782) was a British marine painter. Early life He was born in 1725, and christened on 7 October of that year at St Dunstan's, Stepney, London. His parents were named Francis Swaine and Ann Joel. In 1735 the elder Francis Swaine, the marine painter's father, applied in writing to the Commissioners of His Majesty's Navy for employment as a Navy Messenger, in succession to Mr William Wyatt. He mentions that he had served "upwards of twenty eight years" in the Navy, and that his father had died Purser of the Royal Katherine. He mentions also that he had carried out "little labours in drawing", and that he at that time had five small children. The first-born of these children was the Francis Swaine who became the marine painter. The elder Swaine was duly employed as a Navy Messenger. John Swaine
John Swaine (26 June 1775 – 25 November 1860), was an English draughtsman and engraver. Life and work Swaine was born at Stanwell, Middlesex, on 26 June 1775, the son of John and Margaret Swaine, and became a pupil first of Jacob Schnebbelie and afterwards of Barak Longmate. He is best known for his excellent facsimile copies of old prints, of which the most noteworthy are the famous portrait of Shakespeare by Martin Droeshout, William Faithorne's portrait of Thomas Stanley, David Loggan's frontispiece to the Book of Common Prayer, and the plates to William Ottley's ‘History of Engraving,’ (1816), and Singer's ‘History of Playing Cards,’ 1816. He also engraved many illustrations for various scientific, topographical, and antiquarian works, including the whole series of plates in William Marsden's 'Oriental Coins,’ (1823–5), and many subjects of natural history for the transactions of the Linnean, Zoological, and Entomological societies. John Joseph Swaine
Sir John Joseph Swaine, (Traditional Chinese: 施偉賢爵士, 22 April 1932 – 7 August 2012) was the President of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong from 1993 to 1995. A barrister by training, Swaine was an appointed and unofficial member of the council. Before 1993, the President was the Governor of Hong Kong. Career He was the Deputy President of the Council between 1991 and 1993, when the Governor refrained from presiding over the Council meetings. The post was abolished with the election of the President of the council from amongst the councillors (thus replacing the Governor). Leopold Swaine
Major-General Sir Leopold Victor Swaine KCB CMG (15 December 1840 – 13 March 1931) was a British Army officer, military attaché at Berlin and Lord Wolseley's military secretary during the Anglo-Egyptian War. Military career Swaine's godfather was the King of Belgium. He joined the Rifle Brigade as an Ensign on 24 July 1859, rising to Lieutenant on 16 August 1864. He was later military attaché at Berlin and Lord Wolseley's military secretary during the Anglo-Egyptian War. He held the command of the North-Western military district (at Chester) from 1896 until May 1902, and retired from the army in December the same year. Swaine died on 13 March 1931. He is buried in Brompton Cemetery, London. Monamy Swaine (c.1750–c.1800) was a British painter. His works are held in collections including the National Maritime Museum. His father was the artist Francis Swaine (c.1715-1782) and his mother, Mary, was the daughter of the artist Peter Monamy (1681-1749). Leverington Hall is a 17th-century country house in the parish of Leverington, Cambridgeshire, England. The house is Grade I listed and is privately owned. History The parish of Leverington was not mentioned in the ''Domesday Book''. It is believed that an earlier building, Durham's Place, was on the site. Durham's Place was the property and residence of William Everard, son of Sir Lawrence Everard. The main body of the current house was built , with a crosswing added to the south end in the early 18th century. The first owner was Robert Swaine (d. 1705), son of Thomas Swaine of Wisbech. Alfred Swaine Taylor (11 December 1806 in Northfleet, Kent – 27 May 1880 in London) was an English toxicologist and medical writer, who has been called the "father of British forensic medicine". He was also an early experimenter in photography. Career Taylor studied medicine at Guy's Hospital and St Thomas's Hospital and was appointed Lecturer in Medical Jurisprudence at Guy's Hospital in 1831. In 1832 he succeeded Alexander Barry as joint Lecturer on Chemistry with Arthur Aitken. He published textbooks on medical jurisprudence and toxicology, contributed to the ''Dublin Quarterly Journal'' and medical periodicals, and edited the ''Medical Gazette''. He was the main dissector of Lavinia Edwards's body, a woman who was determined to have been born male, and he wrote extensively about her. Dorothy Swaine Thomas (October 24, 1899 – May 1, 1977) was an American sociologist and economist. She was the 42nd President of the American Sociological Association, the first woman in that role. Life and career Thomas was born on October 24, 1899, in Baltimore, Maryland to John Knight and Sarah Swaine Thomas. Thomas earned a B.A. from Barnard College in 1922. She earned a PhD from the London School of Economics in 1924. For her work there she received the Hutchinson Research Medal. Between 1924 and 1948, Thomas held research and teaching positions at various institutions in the United States and Europe, including at the University of California, Berkeley, Columbia Teachers College, the Federal Reserve Bank in New York and the Institute of Social Science at the University of Stockholm.
