Swadesh List
The Swadesh list ("Swadesh" is pronounced ) is a classic compilation of tentatively universal concepts for the purposes of lexicostatistics. Translations of the Swadesh list into a set of languages allow researchers to quantify the interrelatedness of those languages. The Swadesh list is named after linguist Morris Swadesh. It is used in lexicostatistics (the quantitative assessment of the genealogical relatedness of languages) and glottochronology (the dating of language divergence). Because there are several different lists, some authors also refer to "Swadesh lists". Versions and authors Morris Swadesh himself created several versions of his list. He started with a list of 215 meanings (falsely introduced as a list of 225 meanings in the paper due to a spelling error), which he reduced to 165 words for the Salish-Spokane-Kalispel language. ''Swades: We, the People'' () is a 2004 Indian Hindi-language drama film co-written, directed and produced by Ashutosh Gowariker. The film stars Shah Rukh Khan, Gayatri Joshi and Kishori Ballal while Daya Shankar Pandey, Rajesh Vivek, Lekh Tandon appear in supporting roles. The plot was based on two episodes of the series ''Vaapsi'' on Zee TV's ''Yule Love Stories'' (1994–95) which had Gowariker playing the role of ''Mohan Bhargav''. The story of the lead role setting up a micro hydroelectric project to generate electricity was reported to be inspired by the 2003 Kannada film '' Chigurida Kanasu'' which was based on the novel of the same name by Jnanapith awardee K. Morris Swadesh
Morris Swadesh (; January 22, 1909 – July 20, 1967) was an American linguist who specialized in comparative and historical linguistics. Swadesh was born in Massachusetts to Bessarabian Jewish immigrant parents. He completed bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Chicago, studying under Edward Sapir, and then followed Sapir to Yale University where he completed a Ph.D. in 1933. Swadesh taught at the University of Wisconsin–Madison from 1937 to 1939, and then during World War II worked on projects with the United States Army and Office of Strategic Services. He became a professor at the City College of New York after the war's end, but was fired in 1949 due to his membership in the Communist Party. He spent most of the rest of his life teaching in Mexico and Canada. Swadesh Bharati (born 12 December 1939) is a Hindi poet, recipient of "Premchand Award" and "Sahitya Bhushan Award". He lives in Kolkata from where he edits ''Rupambara'', a literary bilingual quarterly journal. He has been in active field of creative writing since more than 45 years. He is chairman of Rashtriya Hindi Academy and was guest lecturer at Madaras Christian Academy. Swadesh Bose
Swadesh Ranjan Bose ( bn, স্বদেশ রঞ্জন বোস; 2 January 1928 – 3 December 2009) was a Bengali language movement activist and an economist. For his contributions to the field of economics he was posthumously given the Independence Day Award, Bangladesh's highest state award. Biography Bose was born on 2 January 1928 in Kashipur village in Backergunge District, Bengal Province, British India (now Barisal District, Bangladesh). He attended Brojomohun College in Barisal, where he became involved in student politics and obtained his Intermediate of Arts (IA) in 1944. The partition of India in 1947 made Barisal part of the new country of Pakistan. His relatives moved to India, but Bose remained in Barisal. There he was a local organiser of the early stages of the language movement, which demanded that Bengali be one of the official languages of Pakistan. Swadesh Deepak (born 1943) is an Indian playwright, novelist and short-story writer. Deepak has been active on the Hindi literary scene since the mid-1960s and is best known for ''Court Martial,'' a 1991 play. Deepak's most recent book is ''Maine Mandu Nahin Dekha,'' a volume of memoirs. Deepak holds master's degrees in both Hindi and English.
