Svetla Zlateva
Svetla Stefanova Zlateva ( bg, Светла Стефанова Златева; born 25 February 1952) is a retired Bulgarian sprinter and middle-distance runner who specialized in the 400 and 800 metres. She is a former world record holder in the latter event. In 1973, she was the winner of the first Balkan Athlete of the Year award. Career She was born in Gorna Oryahovitsa, and represented the club Levski Sofia. She finished sixth in the 800 metres at the 1970 European Indoor Championships. At the 1971 European Indoor Championships she finished fourth in the 400 metres and won a bronze medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay. She then won the 800 metres bronze medal at the 1972 European Indoor Championships, finished fourth at the 1973 European Indoor Championships3 and again at the 1974 European Indoor Championships. Athletics is a group of sporting events that involves competitive running, jumping, throwing sports, throwing, and walking. Gunhild Hoffmeister
Gunhild Hoffmeister (born 6 July 1944) is a retired East German middle-distance runner. She competed at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics and won two silver and one bronze medal, becoming the only German distance runner to win three Olympic medals. Together with Hans Grodotzki she is the only German runner to win two medals at the same Olympics. Nijolė Sabaitė
Nijolė Sabaitė (born August 12, 1950 in Raseiniai, Lithuanian SSR) is a retired Lithuanian middle distance runner who represented internationally the USSR. She trained at VSS Nemunas in Vilnius. Sabaitė began athletics in 1967 and was a member of the USSR National Team since 1970. She competed mainly in the 800 metres, and won an Olympic silver medal in 1972, between Germans Hildegard Falck (gold) and Gunhild Hoffmeister (bronze). She also won 800m silver at the 1973 Summer Universiade behind Lilyana Tomova from Bulgaria, studying in Vilnius Pedagogical Institute. Hildegard Falck
Hildegard Falck (née ''Janze'' on 8 June 1949) is a retired West German runner. At the 1972 Olympics she won a gold medal in the 800 m and a bronze medal in the 4 × 400 m relay with West German team. In the 800 m final she finished 0.1 seconds ahead of Nijolė Sabaitė and Gunhild Hoffmeister. On 11 July 1971 Falck ran the 800 m in 1:58.5 minutes in Stuttgart, improving the world record of Vera Nikolic by two seconds. She was the first woman to clock a time under two minutes if the unratified marks of Sin Kim Dan are discounted. Her record stood until 1973. Totka Nikolaeva Petrova ( bg, Тотка Петрова, born 17 December 1956) is a retired female middle distance runner who represented Bulgaria in the 1970s and the early 1980s. She specialized in the 800 and 1500 metres, and won numerous international medals. She is still the Bulgarian 1500 metres record holder. Career She was born in Yambol, and represented the club Tundzha Yambol. She won silver medals at the 1977 and 1978 European Indoor Championships. Lilyana Tomova
Lilyana Tomova-Todorova ( bg, Лиляна Томова-Тодорова), born 9 August 1946) is a retired Bulgarian sprinter and middle-distance runner who specialized in the 400, 800 and 1500 metres. Lilyana was born in Plovdiv, and represented the club Trakiya Plovdiv. She won a silver medal in a 4 x 392 metres relay race at the 1974 European Indoor Championships. She also reached the final of the 800 metres event, but did not finish the race. At the 1974 European Championships in the summer she won the gold medal in the 800 metres and silver in the 1500 metres. In winning gold she beat the reigning Olympic 800 metres bronze medallist Gunhild Hoffmeister by 0.67 seconds, but Hoffmeister won the 1500 metres. Nikolina Pavlova Shtereva ( bg, Николина Павлова Щерева; born 25 January 1955) is a retired Bulgarian middle-distance runner who specialised in the 800 and 1500 metres. She is best known for her silver medal in 800 metres at the 1976 Summer Olympics, and at the European Indoor Championships she won gold medals in 1976 and 1979 and a bronze medal in 1981. She won fourteen national titles (outdoor; as well as seven indoor) in Bulgaria, and is still the Bulgarian record holder in the 800 metres. Rositsa Pekhlivanova ( bg, Росица Пехливанова, born 31 January 1955) is a retired Bulgarian middle-distance runner who specialized in the 1500 metres. She was born in Sliven, and represented the clubs Sliven, Levski-Spartak Club and Tundzha Yambol during her career. She won the bronze medal in the 800 metres at the 1975 European Indoor Championships, losing out to the silver medalist by only 0.1 seconds. The next year she won the bronze medal in 1500 metres at the 1976 European Indoor Championships. She was only 0.1 seconds behind the silver medalist Natalia Mărășescu, but beat the fourth placer with a full six seconds. She competed at the 1976 Summer Olympics without reaching the final. Stefka Yordanova
Stefka Yordanova ( bg, Стефка Йорданова; 9 January 1947 – 16 January 2011) was a Bulgarian sprinter and middle-distance runner who specialized in the 400 and 800 metres. Born in Burgas, she ran at the 1971 European Indoor Championships and won a bronze medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay. She then won the 800 metres gold medal at the 1973 European Indoor Championships. In so doing, she broke the indoor 800 metres world record, beating fellow Bulgarian Svetla Zlateva's record that had been set a mere two weeks before. She became Bulgarian 400 metres champion in 1970. Yordanova died in Burgas in on January 16, 2011. |
