Svandís Svavarsdóttir
Svandís Svavarsdóttir (born 24 August 1964 in Selfoss, Iceland) is a member of parliament of the Althing, the Icelandic parliament. She is a member of the Left-Green Movement. She served as Minister for the Environment and Natural Resources (Iceland), Minister for the Environment and Natural Resources in the Second cabinet of Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, government of Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir. In the First cabinet of Katrín Jakobsdóttir she served as Minister of Welfare (Iceland), Minister of Health. She was also the leader of the Left-Green Movement's parliamentary group. She is currently serving as the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture (Iceland), Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture. Selfoss, Iceland
Selfoss () is a town in southern Iceland on the banks of the Ölfusá river. It is the seat of the municipality of Árborg. The Icelandic Route 1 runs through the town on its way between Hveragerði and Hella. The town is a centre of commerce and small industries with a population of 9000 (2021), making it the largest residential area in South Iceland. Geography Selfoss is located about 11 km inland from the southwestern coast of Iceland, and 50 km from Reykjavík. It is the major town and the administrative seat of the Southern Region. The closest other towns are Eyrarbakki, Stokkseyri and Hveragerði. The First cabinet of Katrín Jakobsdóttir was formed on 30 November 2017, following the 2017 parliamentary election. The cabinet was led by Katrín Jakobsdóttir of the Left-Green Movement, who served as Prime Minister of Iceland. The cabinet was a coalition government consisting the Independence Party, the Left-Green Movement and the Progressive Party. Together they held 33 of the 63 seats in the Parliament of Iceland and served as a majority government. Althing
The Alþingi (''general meeting'' in Icelandic, , anglicised as ' or ') is the supreme national parliament of Iceland. It is one of the oldest surviving parliaments in the world. The Althing was founded in 930 at ("thing fields" or "assembly fields"), situated approximately east of what later became the country's capital, Reykjavík. Even after Iceland's union with Norway in 1262, the Althing still held its sessions at until 1800, when it was discontinued. It was restored in 1844 by royal decree and moved to Reykjavík. The restored unicameral legislature first came together in 1845 and after 1874 operated in two chambers with an additional third chamber taking on a greater role as the decades passed until 1991 when Althing became once again unicameral.
