Suvir Misra
Suvir Misra ( sa, सुवीर मिश्र, ) is an Indian player of Rudra Veena, Saraswati Veena, and Surbahar. He is unique in being a left handed artist who has mastered all the three veenas of the Indian classical music - the Rudra Veena, the Saraswati Veena and the Surbahar. He is the inventor of Misr Veena. Early life Suvir Misra was born in Harda, Madhya Pradesh and belongs to a family of musicians. He has studied at Delhi Public School, Mathura Road. He started his journey into music at the age of 12. Personal life He joined Civil Services of India in 1993, and currently is working as a Commissioner of Customs, Customs and Central Excise, Mumbai Career Suvir was trained in the Rudra Veena by Zia Fariduddin Dagar and simultaneously studied dhrupad from Nirmalya Dey. Harda
Harda is a town and a municipality in Harda district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Harda is the administrative headquarters of Harda. History Mughal period During the Mughal period, Harda was a mahal in the Handia sarkar. In 1742, Marathas led by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao captured the area, and displaced the Muslim governor of the Handia sarkar. Gwalior Gharana
The Gwalior Gharana (Gwalior school of classical music) is one of the oldest Khyal Gharana in Indian classical music. The rise of the Gwalior Gharana started with the reign of the Mughal emperor Akbar (1542–1605). The favourite singers of this patron of the arts, such as Miyan Tansen, who was the most famous vocalist at the court, came from the town of Gwalior. History The Gwalior Gharana evolved during the time of the Mughal Empire (1526CE 1857 CE). Saraswati ( sa, सरस्वती, ) is the Hindu goddess of knowledge, music, art, speech, wisdom, and learning. She is one of the Tridevi, along with the goddesses Lakshmi and Parvati. ''Surbahar'' (; ) sometimes known as bass sitar, is a plucked string instrument used in the Hindustani classical music of the Indian subcontinent. It is closely related to the sitar, but has a lower pitch. Depending on the instrument's size, it is usually pitched two to five whole steps below the standard sitar. Overview The surbahar is over 130 cm (51 inches). It uses a dried gourd as a resonator, and has a neck with very wide frets, which allow a glissando or "meend" of as much as an octave on the same fret through the method of pulling. The neck is made out of ''toona'', or mahogany wood. It has 3-4 rhythm strings (''chikari''), four playing strings (the broadest 1 mm), and 10 to 11 sympathetic strings. Rudra (; sa, रुद्र) is a Rigvedic deity associated with Shiva, the wind or storms, Vayu, medicine, and the hunt. One translation of the name is 'the roarer'. In the Rigveda, Rudra is praised as the 'mightiest of the mighty'. Rudra means "who eradicates problems from their roots". Depending upon the periodic situation, Rudra can mean 'the most severe roarer/howler' (could be a hurricane or tempest) or 'the most frightening one'. Ajrara Gharana
Ajrara gharana or Ajrada gharana is one of the six main traditional schools in tabla drum. The distinctiveness of this Gharana is the use of complex Bols and Meend. Pakhawaj bols are rare. The stress is on Ad and Barabar laya. It specializes in the three-time pattern. The position of the left drum is not changed, but its face is touched with the thumb.
