The Suva Highlanders is a Fijian former rugby union team that had a franchise area covering Suva, Naitasiri and Kadavu. The team played in Fiji's premier the Colonial Cup from 2004 to 2008 before the competition ceased in 2008. History The franchise was one of four original teams created for the inaugural Colonial Cup in 2004. Suva Highlanders lost 26-21 to Coastal Stallions in the Grand final of the 2004 Colonial Cup. Northern Sharks were added to the 2005 competition, previously the Northern Division had belonged to the Suva franchise. Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is the governing body for the sport of rugby union in Fiji. It is divided into over 30 provincial unions. The Fiji Rugby Union is a member of the Pacific Islands Rugby Alliance (PIRA), along with Samoa and Tonga. There are approximately 80,000 registered players from a total population of around 950,000. Bill Gadolo
Viliame Titoko Gadolo (born May 1, 1977 in Suva) is a Fijian rugby union player. He plays as a hooker. Career He played for the Suva side in the Digicel Cup since 1999 although he spent one year with Nadroga. By profession, he is a teacher and he teaches at Yat Sen Secondary School. He was a member of the Fiji U21 team that beat Australia U19s in 1999. He made his Test debut in May 2000 against Japan. Gadolo toured with the Fiji A team to Queensland in June 2002, then played against Tonga the following month when Isaia Rasila and Greg Smith were injured. He also captained the Suva provincial side to the semi-finals of the 2004 Digicel Cup. He plays for Suva Highlanders in the Colonial Cup. Dale Tonawai
Dale Tonawai Mataluvu (born 9 May 1980) is a Fijian former international rugby union player. A back-row forward from Lawai, Nadroga, Tonawai captained both the Army and Suva in Fijian rugby. Tonawai made his debut for the Fiji XV against Tonga in Lautoka during the 2007 IRB Pacific Nations Cup and was capped a further two times at the 2010 IRB Pacific Nations Cup. Filimoni Vakalololma Bolavucu (born 13 February 1981 in Suva) is a Fijian rugby union player, who currently plays for Dax in Pro D2. He plays as a wing. He played for the Suva Highlanders in the Colonial Cup. He also played for Lomaiviti in the local tournaments. He has played in the Top 14 competition in France representing Brive and Bayonne. Biography He plays for the Lomaiviti in the Suva club competition and represented Suva Colts in 2000 and 2001. A superb performance in 2002 earned him a place in the senior Suva squad, and he also toured with the Fiji Under 21s to South Africa, playing in all five of Fiji's games. Maseikula ( pronounced: aseikulaː was a Fijian High Chief. He was a Chief of the island of Nayau. Maseikula was a son of High Chief Buivaroro and his wife, the High Chiefess Tarau. Maseikula's grandfather was Naosara. He was a progenitor of a prominent Fijian royal house. It is possible that Maseikula was born on the island of Lakeba, where lived his uncle Kalouyalewa. Colonial Cup (rugby Union)
The Colonial Cup (named after sponsors The Colonial National Bank) is a defunct rugby union football competition that was played in Fiji between 2004 and 2008. The Colonial Cup was Fiji's first attempt at a professional rugby competition, but it did not draw sufficient crowds and ceased after five seasons. History In 2004, with the gap between provincial rugby in Fiji and test rugby at an unacceptable level, the Fiji Rugby Union introduced a brand new, streamlined competition to identify and prepare local players for the international stage. The 30-odd provincial unions were grouped into four franchises along geographical lines. Players not selected for one team could be picked up by one of the others. Players were paid £40 a week plus lodgings. The new competition started on 3 April 2004 and finished 22 May 2004 in time for the international test window.
