Sussex Downs Conservation Board
Sussex Downs Conservation Board was an English local government organisation based in East and West Sussex to promote and manage the Sussex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In March 2010 the status of the AONB was revoked and the management of the Sussex Downs AONB was merged with the East Hampshire AONB under the South Downs Joint Committee pending the formation of a national park authority. Sussex Downs AONB
Sussex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England was designated in 1966. The designation was revoked in March 2010, together with the neighbouring East Hampshire AONB, upon the establishment of the South Downs National Park. The area of the AONB was largely the same as the portion of the National Park within East Sussex, East and West Sussex, containing the South Downs as well as part of Weald, The Weald. In the latter years of the AONB, the management of the two Sussex Downs Conservation Board, AONBs of Sussex Downs and East Hampshire was combined under the South Downs Joint Committee, taking responsibility for conservation within the two areas in anticipation of the National Park. East Hampshire AONB
East Hampshire Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in England was designated in 1962. The designation was revoked in March 2010, together with the neighbouring Sussex Downs AONB, upon the establishment of the South Downs National Park. The southern part of the area is mainly rolling chalk downland used for farming that is a westward extension of the Sussex Downs. The north and east includes steep wooded hills and heathland. Features include: Petersfield, Hampshire, Petersfield, the River Rother (Western), Rother valley, Warnford and West Meon. Four National Nature Reserves and many several Sites of Special Scientific Interest fall within the AONB. The Hanger's Way, South Downs Way, Staunton Way and Wayfarers Walk, Wayfarer's Walk long-distance paths pass through it. Notable hills include Butser Hill near Petersfield, Beacon Hill and Old Winchester Hill near Corhampton and St. Catherine's Hill, Hampshire, St Catherine's Hill and Cheesefoot Head near Winchester. South Downs National Park
The South Downs National Park is England's newest national park, designated on 31 March 2010. The park, covering an area of in southern England, stretches for from Winchester in the west to Eastbourne in the east through the counties of Hampshire, West Sussex and East Sussex. The national park covers the chalk hills of the South Downs (which on the English Channel coast form the white cliffs of the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head) and a substantial part of a separate physiographic region, the western Weald, with its heavily wooded sandstone and clay hills and vales. The South Downs Way spans the entire length of the park and is the only National Trail that lies wholly within a national park.
