Susheela Raman (born 21 July 1973) is a British musician. She was nominated for the 2006 BBC World Music Awards. Her debut album '' Salt Rain'' was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2001. She is known for energetic, vibrant, syncretic, and uplifting live performances built on the sacred Bhakti and Sufi traditions of India and Pakistan. Biography Early years Susheela Raman's parents are Tamils from Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, India, who arrived in London, UK in the mid-1960s. At the age of four, Raman and her family left the UK for Australia. Susheela grew up singing Carnatic music and began giving recitals at an early age. She recalls how her family "were eager to keep our Tamil culture alive." As a teenager in Sydney she started her own band, describing its sound as "funk and rock and roll", before branching out into more blues and jazz-based music, which demanded quite different voice techniques. Sushila Ganesh Mavalankar (4 August 1904 – 11 December 1995) was an Indian freedom fighter. She was elected to the 1st Lok Sabha unopposed from Ahmedabad in 1956. Early life Daughter to Ramakrishna Gopinath Gurjar Date, Sushila was born on 4 August 1904 in the Bombay State and did her schooling to the under- metric level. Career Mavalankar took active part in the Indian Independence movement and on the call of Mahatma Gandhi participated in the Quit India Movement in 1942, which led to her imprisonment by the British authorities. She attended the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II held in June 1953. The death of Ganesh Mavalankar in February 1956 prompted a bye-election for the Ahmedabad seat. Sushila Kerketta (27 April 1939 – 19 October 2009) was a member of the Bihar Vidhan Sabha from 1985 to 2000 and also in Lok sabha from Khunti. She held several important portfolios in the Bihar government. She was minister of state for irrigation (independent charge) from 1985 to 1988.
