Susanne Menden-Deuer
Susanne Menden-Deuer is an oceanographer and marine scientist known for her work on marine food webs, including their structure and function. As of 2022 she is president-elect of the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography. Education and career Menden-Deuer received her Diplom in 1996 from the University of Bonn. She went on to receive an M.Sc. (1998) and a Ph.D. (2004) from the University of Washington. Following her Ph.D. Menden-Deuer worked at Princeton University and Western Washington University. She moved to the University of Rhode Island in 2008, and was promoted to professor i 2017. In 2022, the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography announced Menden-Deuer as president-elect for the society. Research Menden-Deuer is known for her work on the motility of plankton and their production. Seymour Herbert Hutner (1911–2003) was a microbiologist specializing in the nutritional biochemistry of protists (protozoa and algae). Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1911, he obtained a bachelor's degree from the City College of New York (CCNY) in 1931 and a Ph.D. at Cornell University in 1937, where he worked with the Nobel laureate James B. Sumner. In 1936 he published a paper showing that the photosynthetic flagellate Euglena had a nutritional requirement for a substance extracted from animal tissue. ''Heterosigma akashiwo'' is a species of microscopic algae of the class Raphidophyceae. It is a swimming marine alga that episodically forms toxic surface aggregations known as harmful algal bloom. The species name ''akashiwo'' is from the Japanese for "red tide". Synonyms include ''Olisthodiscus luteus'' (Hulburt 1965), and ''Entomosigma akashiwo'' (Hada 1967). ''H. akashiwo'' and ''H. inlandica'' have been recognized as two species of ''Heterosigma''. However, Hara and Chihara (1987) described both specimens as one species, validly describing them as ''H. akashiwo''.
