Surtees TS9
The Surtees TS9 was a Formula One car used by Surtees during the 1971, 1972 and 1973 Formula One seasons. It was designed by John Surtees and Peter Connew. Racing history 1971-1973: Surtees The TS9 made its debut at the 1971 South African Grand Prix, Only one chassis was available for English driver/owner John Surtees but he retired with a gearbox problem. A second car was available for German Rolf Stommelen for Spain but the German retired with fuel pressure failure and Surtees finished 11th, At the Monaco Grand Prix Stommelen finished sixth and Surtees seventh. For Holland the Englishman finished fifth and the German was disqualified for being push-started by marshals after he spun. At the French Grand Prix Surtees finished eighth and Stommelen 11th. The Surtees Racing Organisation was a race team that spent nine seasons (1970 to 1978) as a constructor in Formula One, Formula 2, and Formula 5000. History The team was formed by John Surtees, a four-time List of Grand Prix motorcycle racing World Champions by year, 500cc motorcycle champion and the 1964 List of Formula One World Drivers' Champions, Formula One champion. Surtees formed the team in 1966 for the newly formed Canadian-American Challenge Cup, CanAm series (an unlimited sports car series), winning the championship as an owner/driver in its first year. He fielded an entry in another newly formed series in 1969, becoming part of Formula 5000 after taking over the failed Leda F5000 project, and his team constructed its own cars for the first time. Longitudinal Engine
In automotive engineering, a longitudinal engine is an internal combustion engine in which the crankshaft is oriented along the long axis of the vehicle, front to back. Use This type of motor is usually used for rear-wheel drive cars, except for some Audi and SAAB models equipped with longitudinal engines in front wheel drive. In front-wheel drive cars a transverse engine is usually used. Trucks often have longitudinal engines with rear-wheel drive. For motorcycles, the use of a particular type depends on the drive: in case of a chain or belt drive a transverse engine is usually used, and with shaft drives a longitudinal engine. Longitudinal engines in motorcycles do have one disadvantage: the "tipping point" of the crankshaft tilts along the entire motorcycle to a greater or lesser degree when accelerating. The 1971 Monaco Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held at Monaco on May 23, 1971. 1971 Spanish Grand Prix
The 1971 Spanish Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held at the Montjuïc circuit on April 18, 1971. It was race 2 of 11 in both the 1971 World Championship of Drivers and the 1971 International Cup for Formula One Manufacturers. The 75-lap race was won by Tyrrell driver Jackie Stewart after he started from fourth position. Jacky Ickx finished second for the Ferrari team and Matra driver Chris Amon came in third. This was notably the first Formula One race in which slick tyres were used. The tyres were introduced by Firestone, based on its experience in American open wheel racing series. 1972 Formula One Season
The 1972 Formula One season was the 26th season of the FIA's Formula One motor racing. It featured the 23rd World Championship of Drivers, the 15th International Cup for F1 Manufacturers and numerous non-championship Formula One races. The World Championship season commenced on 23 January and ended on 8 October after twelve races. For 1972 Team Lotus focused again on the type 72 chassis. Imperial Tobacco continued its sponsorship of the team under its new John Player Special brand. The cars, now often referred to as 'JPS', were fielded in a new black and gold livery.
