Surrey Stakes
The Surrey Stakes is a Listed flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years only. It is run at Epsom over a distance of 7 furlongs and 3 yards (1,411 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late May or early June. The race was first run in 1995, as the ''Vodacom Conditions Stakes''. It was given its current name and awarded Listed status in 1998. Conditions Races
Conditions races are horse races in which the weights carried by the runners are laid down by the conditions attached to the race. Weights are allocated according to the sex of the runners, with female runners carrying less weight than males; the age of the runners, with younger horses receiving weight from older runners to allow for relative maturity, referred to as weight for age; and the quality of the runners, with horses that have won certain values of races giving weight to less successful entrants. Conditions races are distinct from handicap races, for which the weights carried are laid down by an official handicapper to equalise the difference in ability between the runners. In Great Britain, for example, the British Horseracing Authority's rules define a conditions race as being one "which is none of the following; a Handicap Race or a Novice Race, a race restricted to Maiden Horses, or a race governed by Selling or Claiming provisions." Willie Ryan (jockey)
Willie Ryan (b 22 December 1964) is an ex-flat racing jockey from England who was based in the United Kingdom for most of his career. Ryan was apprenticed to the trainer Reg Hollinshead and won his first race at Windsor Racecourse in 1982. He was joint British flat racing Champion Apprentice in 1985. He joined Henry Cecil's stable and was second jockey to Steve Cauthen before becoming first jockey in 1993. He won The Derby on Benny the Dip for John Gosden in 1997. In 2004 he was awarded the Flat Jockey Special Recognition Award at the Lester Awards ceremony. Mark Prescott
Sir Mark Prescott, 3rd Baronet (born 1948), is an English race horse trainer with over 2000 winners to his name, including Alpinista, winner of the 2022 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. He is based at Heath House Stables, an historic 50 box yard at the bottom of Warren Hill in Newmarket. Background Prescott is the son of Conservative Party MP Stanley Prescott and grandson of Sir William Prescott, 1st Baronet, who was also a Conservative MP. He attended Harrow School and in 1965 inherited the Prescott baronetcy from his uncle. Prescott left school aged fifteen, with plans to become a jockey. He was riding in a race at Wye in 1965 when he broke his back in a fall, resulting in a nine-month hospital stay. Seb Sanders
Seb Sanders (born 25 September 1971 in Birmingham, England) is a former flat race jockey. Sanders was British Champion Flat Jockey in 2007, a title he shared with Jamie Spencer. Early life Born in Birmingham, Sanders' father, a plumber introduced him to racing by a chance meeting of Tamworth based trainer Bryan McMahon. Sanders himself was keen to be a professional footballer for Birmingham City, but his father was able to secure him work at McMahon's yard. After which, McMahon sent Sanders to the British Racing School in Newmarket. Career Sanders rode his first winner on 12 June 1990 on Band On The Run at Pontefract. In 1994, Sanders moved to Reg Akehurst's yard in Epsom and won the 1995 Champion Apprentice title, with 61 winners. Hooray (horse)
Hooray (foaled 17 March 2008) is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Bred and owned by the Cheveley Park Stud she won five of her thirteen races in a racing career which lasted from June 2010 until October 2011. In 2010 she was rated the best filly of her age in Europe when she won the Lowther Stakes, the Sirenia Stakes (in record time) and the Cheveley Park Stakes (by four and a half lengths). She was not so successful as a three-year-old, recording her only success in the Surrey Stakes. At the end of the year she returned to Cheveley Park to become a broodmare and produced her first foal in 2013. Johnny Murtagh
Johnny Murtagh (born 14 May 1970) is an Irish flat racing trainer and former jockey from Bohermeen, near Navan, Kells, County Meath. As a jockey he won many of the major flat races in Europe, including all the Irish Classics, all the Group 1 Races at Royal Ascot, The Derby, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes and Europe's biggest race the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. John Gosden
John Harry Martin Gosden (born 30 March 1951) is a British racehorse trainer. He has trained over 3,000 winners worldwide, including winners of the Breeders' Cup Classic, the Derby, the Arc, the King George, the Eclipse, and over 600 winners in the United States. Gosden has trained the winners of over 100 Group 1 races in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. He is generally considered one of the finest and most successful racehorse trainers of his generation. Richard Hills (jockey)
Richard Hills (born 22 January 1963) is a retired flat racing jockey. He is twin brother to Michael Hills (also a jockey) and their father is former racehorse trainer Barry Hills. The twins' older brother John Hills was also a trainer. They also have two younger brothers, Charles Hills (who has succeeded their father Barry as a racehorse trainer) and George Hills who works in the Breeding and Insurance side of the industry in Kentucky, United States. Andrew Matthews Balding (born 29 December 1972) is a British racehorse trainer based at Park House Stables, Kingsclere, near Newbury, Berkshire. Balding attended Caldicott School, a boys' preparatory school, and Radley College, a public school. He became a licensed trainer in January 2003, when he succeeded his father Ian Balding. His elder sister is Clare Balding. John Dunlop (racehorse Trainer)
John Leeper Dunlop (10 July 1939 – 7 July 2018) was an English race horse trainer based in Arundel, Sussex. He trained the winners of 74 Group One races, including 10 British Classics, with over 3000 winners in total. He was the British flat racing Champion Trainer in 1995. Born in Tetbury, he first took out a training licence in 1966. After a two-year apprenticeship with Neville Dent and Gordon Smyth he took over Castle Stables in Arundel, on the Duke of Norfolk's estate. Richard Quinn (jockey)
Thomas Richard Quinn, better known as Richard Quinn (born 2 December 1961) is a Scottish jockey. Life and career After leaving Bannockburn High School in 1977, aged 15, he moved to York to work as a stable lad. This career led to Quinn moving to work for Paul Cole in Lambourn for 17 years (1981–1998). After some years as a freelance jockey, he joined Henry Cecil in Newmarket (2000–2004). Quinn has raced with owners Prince Fahd bin Salman (1990–1991) and John L. Dunlop. Among other victories, Quinn has achieved 26 victories at Goodwood Racecourse.
