Surrey Memorial Hospital
Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) is a publicly funded hospital owned and operated by Fraser Health in the city of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada adjacent to King George Boulevard. Overview Surrey Memorial Hospital began operations in early 1959, with its official opening being on 31 January. It is one of twelve hospitals under the jurisdiction of the Fraser Health Authority, which provides health services to more than 1.8 million people. Surrey Memorial is the second largest hospital in British Columbia and has the busiest emergency department. As of 2019, SMH provides service to over 158,558 emergency department patients per year, making it the second busiest in Canada. The hospital offers general medical services, as well as a dedicated pediatrics emergency area, a regional referral centre for specialized pediatrics and maternity care, hospice, and two extended care units. The Fraser Health Authority (FHA) is one of five publicly funded health authorities into which the Canadian province of British Columbia (BC) is divided. It is governed by the provincial ''Health Authorities Act''. White Rock, British Columbia
White Rock is a city in British Columbia, Canada, and a member municipality of the Metro Vancouver Regional District. It borders Semiahmoo Bay to the south and is surrounded on three sides by Surrey, British Columbia, Surrey. To the southeast across a footbridge lies the Semiahmoo First Nation, which is within the borders of Surrey. Semiahmoo Bay and the Southern Gulf Islands in the Strait of Georgia are also to the south. White Rock is named for a large white boulder on its beach near the promenade, a glacial erratic that migrated south during the last glaciation. Eric Charles Fitzgerald Martin (September 15, 1905 – April 23, 1973) was an accountant, stock broker and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Vancouver-Burrard in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1952 to 1966 as a Social Credit member. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the son of John Fitzgerald Martin and Margaret Edith Goodday, and was educated in London, England and Victoria, British Columbia. In 1941, Martin married Margaret Boyd. He served as a sergeant-instructor in the Canadian Army during World War II. In 1945, Martin was an unsuccessful candidate in the federal riding of Vancouver Centre. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the provincial assembly in 1945 and 1949 before being elected in 1952 in Vancouver-Burrard. He was only in second place in the first count. British Columbia Social Credit Party
The British Columbia Social Credit Party, whose members are known as Socreds, was the governing provincial political party of British Columbia, Canada, for all but three years between the 1952 provincial election and the 1991 election. For four decades, the party dominated the British Columbian political scene, with the only break occurring between the 1972 and 1975 elections when the British Columbia New Democratic Party governed.
