Surfing Locations In South West Western Australia
Most surf breaks in the Capes region – from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin – within the larger area known as the South West region of Western Australia tend to have the name ''Margaret River'' attached, despite the wide geographic range of locations where the breaks are located. Context Surfing in this region was well established in the 1970s, with a 1970 government mapping guide to the region identifying surfing locations. By the 1990s the names of the individual breaks were so well established that online and published guides were able to locate and identify the behaviours of the breaks. The surfing culture of the region is well embedded in the communities along the coast. The roads named below run off Caves Road, the main western route between Dunsborough and Augusta. Cape Clairault
Cape Clairault is located south of Yallingup in the coastal region between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin. It was named after French mathematician Alexis Claude Clairault by the French expedition of 1801-1803 along the western coast of Australia. The cape name has been used in a range of local winery business names. The beach at the location is considered hazardous, and there are surf breaks nearby: Injidup Point and Carparks and Pea Break to the north, and the Wildcat and The Window breaks to the south. Cape Clairault break lies to the south of the Cape itself. By line of sight, Cape Clairault extends out from the coast enough to be seen from Cape Naturaliste, or vice versa, and as a consequence is often cited as a landmark within the range of the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse light. Hamelin Bay, Western Australia
Hamelin Bay is a bay and a locality on the southwest coast of Western Australia between Cape Leeuwin and Cape Naturaliste. It is named after French explorer Jacques Félix Emmanuel Hamelin, who sailed through the area in about 1801. It is south of Cape Freycinet. To the north, the beach leads to the '' Boranup Sand Patch'' and further to the mouth of the Margaret River, while south leads to Cape Leeuwin. The nearest locality to the east is Karridale on the Margaret River to Augusta road. It was also a small settlement and port in Western Australia on the coast of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge. Port and jetty The jetty was established to service the timber milling operations of Davies, at the same time as utilising a jetty at Flinders Bay just south of Augusta. One of the Davies timber railways extended onto the Hamelin Bay Jetty, which was built in 1882 and extended in 1898. Only a few piles of the original jetty remain on site. Boranup, Western Australia
Boranup, in the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River in the South West region of Western Australia, is the site of a large coastal dune blow out known as the "Boranup sand patch" as part of the Boranup beach, and the site of a former M. C. Davies timber company mill. The sand patch area and sand blows affected the alignment of the Busselton to Flinders Bay railway. It is a karri forest remnant area in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, as well as a Western Australian State Forest area. Boranup Forest contains many limestone karst caves, including Nannup Cave and Dingo Cave. The Boranup area includes private property, a cafe and a gallery, a maze and a scenic drive. Cape Hamelin
Cape Hamelin is a headland seven kilometres south of Hamelin Bay in the capes region of south western Western Australia. Except for Cape Leeuwin, it is the southernmost of over 1,000 kilometres of features named by the French in their travels along the coast. Wrecks of ships have occurred within the vicinity of the cape. The cape is in an area where crayfishing has been practised, and also where it has been restricted. Cape Mentelle
Cape Mentelle is a limestone headland on the Indian Ocean coast of south-western Western Australia. It is within the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, just north of the mouth of the Margaret River and west of the town of Margaret River. It lies on the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, halfway between Cape Naturaliste to the north, and Cape Leeuwin to the south, on the route of the Cape to Cape walking track. History The cape was named on 4 February 1803 by French navigator Nicolas Baudin, on his expedition to Australia, after Edme Mentelle (1730-1815), a French geographer, historian and cartographer. Ellensbrook
Ellensbrook is a heritage-listed property in Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park in the locality of Yebble, Western Australia near Margaret River. Also known as Ellensbrook House or Ellensbrook Homestead, the property is managed by the National Trust of Western Australia. History The site where Ellensbrook is located was historically a Noongar camping ground named Mokidup, close to the sacred site of Meekadarribee Cave. In 1857, settlers Ellen and Alfred Bussell decided to build a new home on the site. The location was desirable due to its protection from storms, supply of fresh water, and the fertility of the soil. The homestead was built in stages over several decades using the labour of ticket-of-leave convicts, sailors who had deserted, and the local Noongar people, and was named after Ellen Bussell. Cowaramup Bombora
Cowaramup Bombora (also known as ''Cowie Bombie'' or simply Cow Bombie) is a big wave open-ocean surf break found on the south-west coast of Western Australia. It is located offshore west of Gracetown which is near the town of Margaret River, world-renowned for its surf, and is south of the capital city Perth. The break first came to the world’s attention in 2007, when local Damon Eastaugh won the Big Wave Award after riding a wave estimated to be more than . It doesn't break often, requiring huge swells from the Southern Ocean, but these can produce very large waves often in excess of with some contending for the biggest wave in Australia at over . Its name comes from Cowaramup, the name of the small local townsite, and bombora, an Indigenous Australian term for an area of large sea waves breaking over a shallow area. Prevelly, Western Australia
Prevelly is a townsite in the South West region of Western Australia. It is located on the coast at the mouth of Margaret River at the northern end of Calgardup Bay. At the , Prevelly had a population of 205. It was privately subdivided by Geoff Edwards in the early 1960s and named Prevelly; the shire petitioned for a townsite to be declared in 1977 and it was duly gazetted in 1978. The town was named after the Preveli monastery on Crete. Edwards was among the Australian soldiers given shelter at the St. John Monastery in 1941 prior to evacuation aboard . To thank the people of Crete and the Monastery, he began construction of a St. John the Theologian chapel in Prevelly. Gracetown, Western Australia
Gracetown is a small town in Western Australia. It is located south of the Perth central business district, and north-west of the township of Margaret River in the Augusta-Margaret River Shire Council area on the coast at Cowaramup Bay. History The first recorded use of the area was as a holiday area and later in 1957 it was proposed that the area should be developed as a camping and caravan park. Instead the government decided that the area would be developed as a townsite. The area was surveyed in 1961 and the bulk of the townsite was planned. Sale of lots within the townsite occurred in 1963, the same year the town was gazetted. It was named in honour of local Western Australian heroine Grace Bussell. In 2021, the new locality of Yebble was created from non-residential parts of Gracetown and Burnside.
