Surface Magazine
''Surface'' is an American publication covering design, architecture, fashion, culture and travel; with print and digital publications. The publication has an online presence through the ''Design Dispatch'' daily newsletter, as well as through social media. History ''Surface'' was founded in 1993 by Richard Klein and Riley Johndonnell. The magazine was based in San Francisco until 2005, when the main offices were relocated to New York City. In 1994, ''Surface'' was described by ''Vanity Fair'' as one of 10 “upstart magazines to watch”. In 1997, ''Surface'' introduced its inaugural ''Avant Guardian'' issue, which focused on the Avant Guardian Awards, a fashion photography competition. Julian Schnabel
Julian Schnabel (born October 26, 1951) is an American painter and filmmaker. In the 1980s, he received international attention for his "plate paintings" — with broken ceramic plates set onto large-scale paintings. Since the 1990s, he has been a proponent of independent arthouse cinema. David Rockwell (born July 25, 1956) is an American architect and designer. He is the founder and president of Rockwell Group, a 250-person cross-disciplinary architecture and design practice based in New York City with satellite offices in Madrid and Los Angeles. Early life and education Rockwell grew up in a theater family. His mother, a vaudeville dancer and choreographer, often cast him in community repertory productions. When he was 12, David's family moved from Deal, New Jersey to Guadalajara, Mexico. Rockwell trained in architecture at Syracuse University and the Architectural Association in London. Bettina Korek (born 1978) is an American arts advocate, writer, and the founder of ForYourArt, a public practice organization based in Los Angeles. She founded ForYourArt a platform to produce and distribute artists’ work. Valerie Fahnestock Steele (born 1955) is an American fashion historian, curator, and director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
