Supermono
Supermono is a class in European motorcycle road racing. Supermono class machines have a single-cylinder engine A single-cylinder engine, sometimes called a thumper, is a piston engine with one cylinder. This engine is often used for motorcycles, motor scooters, go-karts, all-terrain vehicles, radio-controlled vehicles, portable tools and garden machinery ... with a maximum displacement of 800 cc. The British Supermono series allows "unlimited" engine size, but this involves keeping under the ACU accepted size of 1300cc. In contrast to F450 (or Super Single) machines, Supermono machines use most of the donor bike (usually small and agile race bikes) and swap out the engine for that of a modern 450cc dirt bike. A single-cylinder engine, sometimes called a thumper, is a piston engine with one cylinder. This engine is often used for motorcycles, motor scooters, go-karts, all-terrain vehicles, radio-controlled vehicles, portable tools and garden machinery (such as lawnmowers, cultivators, and string trimmers). Single-cylinder engines are made both as 4-strokes and 2-strokes. Characteristics Compared with multi-cylinder engines, single-cylinder engines are usually simpler and compact. Due to the greater potential for airflow around all sides of the cylinder, air cooling is often more effective for single cylinder engines than multi-cylinder engines. This reduces the weight and complexity of air-cooled single-cylinder engines, compared with liquid-cooled engines. Drawbacks of single-cylinder engines include a more pulsating power delivery through each cycle and higher levels of vibration. Gavin Trippe (1940 - 2 July 2018) was a motorcycle racing promoter, journalist, and publisher who was inducted to the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2005. He died following an automobile accident in California. Trippe was a motorcycling journalist in the UK until he founded a motorcycling magazine, ''Motor Cycle Weekly'', in the United States in 1969. In the early 1970s he brought European style motocross racing to the US by founding the Carlsbad USGP. Trippe was also the creator of supermoto racing, which attracted a large US television audience from 1979–1985, and had a resurgence, first in Europe and then beyond, since the early 2000s. Since 2007 Trippe worked to create a single cylinder racing class with low barriers to entry for amateur racers and young riders.
