Superman (The Clique Song)
"Superman" is a 1969 song by the Texas band The Clique, made more famous in 1986 when it was recorded by R.E.M. It was written by Mitchell Bottler and Gary Zekley and originally released as the first single off of The Clique's first album for White Whale Records. R.E.M. recorded it for their fourth album, ''Lifes Rich Pageant''. It was released as a single and received a fair amount of radio play, but did not chart on the main US singles chart, though it did reach #17 on ''Billboard'' magazine's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. R.E.M. version The B-side to the single, a surf rock instrumental entitled "White Tornado", was first recorded by the band in 1981. The version used on the single was recorded in January, 1984, during the ''Reckoning'' sessions, but remained unreleased until "Superman." Lifes Rich Pageant
''Lifes Rich Pageant'' is the fourth studio album by the American alternative rock band R.E.M., released on July 28, 1986. R.E.M. chose Don Gehman to produce the album, which was recorded at John Mellencamp's Belmont Mall Studios in Belmont, Indiana. This was the only album the band recorded with Gehman, who moved them from the more obscure and dense sound of their earlier albums to an accessible, hard rock-influenced quality. The album was well-received critically. Details The album title is based on an English idiom. "Perfect Circle" is a song by American rock band R.E.M. and is the sixth track from their 1983 debut album '' Murmur''. Music Like many songs from ''Murmur'', "Perfect Circle" has a sound typified by unusual instruments and recording techniques. The song opens with Honky tonk piano, a style more associated with ragtime and early country music than the college rock scene of which R.E.M. was a member. Two pianos were recorded, and the slightly out-of-sync sound and reverb achieve a detached otherworldly effect. The song also features Peter Buck's 12 string guitar. Peter Buck
Peter Lawrence Buck (born December 6, 1956) is an American musician and songwriter. He was a co-founder and the lead guitarist of the alternative rock band R.E.M. He also plays the banjo and mandolin on several R.E.M. songs. Throughout his career with R.E.M. (1980–2011), as well as during his subsequent solo career, Buck has also been at various times an official member of numerous 'side project' groups.
