The Supercopa de España or the ''Spanish Super Cup'' is a super cup tournament in Spanish football. Founded in 1982 as a two-team competition, the current version has been contested since 2019–20 by four teams: the winners and runners-up of the Copa del Rey and La Liga. Real Madrid are the most recent winners. History The current competition has existed since 1982. Between 1940 and 1953, several other tournaments between the Spanish league champions and the cup winners (then ''Copa del Generalísimo'') were played. In September 1940, a match with this format had the name of Copa de Campeones. The 2022–23 Supercopa de España was the 39th edition of the Supercopa de España, an annual football competition for clubs in the Spanish football league system that were successful in its major competitions in the preceding season. Barcelona won the tournament for their fourteenth Supercopa de España title. Qualification The tournament featured the winners and runners-up of the 2021–22 Copa del Rey and 2021–22 La Liga. 1939–40 La Liga
The 1939–40 La Liga was the ninth season since its establishment and the first one after the Spanish Civil War, that forced to suspend the competition during three years. The season started on December 3, 1939, and finished on April 28, 1940. Despite being relegated in the previous season, Atlético Aviación won its first title ever. Format changes For this season, the team qualified in the 10th position would face the second qualified team from Segunda División in a single-game play-off at a neutral venue.
