Sunwapta Falls is a pair of waterfalls of the Sunwapta River in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. The falls are accessible via a access road off the Icefields Parkway, which connects Jasper and Banff National Parks. The falls have a drop of about . ''Sunwapta'' is a Stoney language word that means "turbulent water". The falls is most spectacular in the late spring when the spring melt is at its peak. There are two falls, a lower and an upper one. The one most people see is the upper falls, as access is easier. The lower falls are a short distance away. Sunwapta Peak
Sunwapta Peak is a peak in the Sunwapta River valley of Jasper National Park, just north of the Columbia Icefield in Alberta, Canada. The peak was named in 1892 after the Stoney language word meaning "turbulent river". The mountain can be seen from the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93). Routes The normal climbing route (an easy scramble) is via the southwest slopes, requiring an elevation gain of to the summit from the trail head beside the Icefields Parkway. Geology Sunwapta Peak is composed of sedimentary rock laid down from the Precambrian to Jurassic periods that was pushed east and over the top of younger rock during the Laramide orogeny. The Sunwapta River is a major tributary of the Athabasca River in Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada. Course The headwaters of the Sunwapta River are near the Columbia Icefield in the valley west-northwest of Sunwapta Pass, which divides Jasper National Park from Banff National Park. Several kilometres down the valley from the pass is Sunwapta Lake, at the toe of the Athabasca Glacier, which is considered the nominal source for the river. The Sunwapta River then continues to run northwest through Jasper National Park, following the Icefields Parkway, and finally joins the Athabasca River shortly after Sunwapta Falls.
