Sunshine Nan
''Sunshine Nan'' is a surviving 1918 American silent comedy-drama film starring Ann Pennington and directed by Charles Giblyn. It is based on the novel ''Calvary Alley'' by Alice Hegan Rice. It was produced by Famous Players–Lasky and distributed by Paramount Pictures. Plot As described in a film magazine, Nance Molloy (Pennington) and Dan Lewis (Hines), children of the slums, are sweethearts. They become mixed up in the death of a neighbor and are sent to reform school. Upon their release they are employed at the Clark Shoe Factory. MacPherson Clark (Barthelmess), son of the owner of the factory, endeavors to steal the formula of a dye developed by Dan, but Nan frustrates his efforts. The patent for the dye brings wealth to Nan and Dan and they are wed. Charles Giblyn
Charles Giblyn (September 6, 1871 – March 14, 1934) was an American film director and actor of the silent era. He directed nearly 100 films between 1912 and 1927. He also appeared in 23 films between 1914 and 1934. He was one of the founders of the Motion Picture Directors Association. Beginning in 1914, Giblyn worked with the Universal Motion Picture Manufacturing Company. He founded Albion Productions, a film production company, in 1922. Giblyn was also the screenwriter for ''Scandal'' (1917). On Broadway, Giblyn acted in ''The Song of the Sword'' (1899), ''Wheels Within Wheels'' (1899), and ''The Ambassador'' (1900). Giblyn was born in Watertown, New York and died in Los Angeles, California. Richard Barthelmess
Richard Semler Barthelmess (May 9, 1895 – August 17, 1963) was an American film actor, principally of the Hollywood silent era. He starred opposite Lillian Gish in D. W. Griffith's '' Broken Blossoms'' (1919) and ''Way Down East'' (1920) and was among the founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1927. The following year, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for two films: ''The Patent Leather Kid'' and '' The Noose''. Early life Barthelmess was born in New York City, the son of Caroline W. Harris, a stage actress, and Alfred W. Barthelmess. His father died when he was a year old. Through his mother, he grew up in the theatre, doing "walk-ons" from an early age. Frank Losee (June 12, 1856 – November 14, 1937) was an American stage and screen actor. A veteran of the Broadway stage he began in silent films in 1915. Often he played the father of Mary Pickford, Pauline Frederick and Marguerite Clark. Charles Eldridge
Charles Eldridge (September 25, 1854 – October 29, 1922) was an American stage and screen actor of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He appeared in over 100 films, although the majority of those were film shorts. He began on the stage during the 1870s, and appeared in at least one Broadway play, Charles Frohman's 1899 production of ''Because She Loved Him So''. His first appearance in film was in a 1910 short, ''The Legacy'', in which he starred. His first appearance in a feature film was in ''The Strange Story of Sylvia Gray''. In addition to the over 100 shorts he was in, Eldridge appeared in 27 feature films between 1914 and 1922. Helen Tracy
Helen Tracy (May 7, 1850 – September 5, 1924) was an American stage and silent film actress. Tracy was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and grew up in San Francisco. Tracy's stage career began there in stock theater at the California Theatre. From there she went east, acting in stock for two years at the Boston Theatre. On September 20, 1870, she opened with Wallack's stock company, portraying Julia in ''The Rivals''. Her Broadway debut came in ''Birth'' (1871), and her last Broadway credit was ''Romance'' (1921). Tracy began working in films around 1916 and did only a few features. She was the mother of Virginia Tracy through a relationship with actor John McCullough. She died at the Actors' Fund Home on Staten Island on September 5, 1924.
