Sunset Hill was a former Gold Coast estate located in Flower Hill and Plandome, on Long Island, in New York. History The mansion Architect Albert F. D'Oench and his wife, Alice Grace D'Oench (the daughter of William R. Grace) purchased this land in 1905; they purchased the land from the O'Connor estate, which included a farm (also called Sunset Hill). They erected a mansion shortly after, which Albert designed. The estate was called Sunset Hill, due to its high elevation atop a hill and how its location provided for excellent views of the sunset during the summer and autumn months; furthermore, the mansion faced the west. The hill on which the mansion was located reaches elevations high enough for the skyline of New York City to be seen. When built, the mansion was regarded as one of the Manhasset area's most spacious. In 1918, Abert D'Oench died at Sunset Hill after suffering from an illness. Flower Hill is a village in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. The eastern half is considered part of the Greater Roslyn area, which is anchored by the Incorporated Village of Roslyn. Western and northern parts are more closely associated with Manhasset and Port Washington. The population was 4,794 at the 2020 census. Chanticlare (often spelled Chanteclair) was a Gold Coast estate in Flower Hill, on Long Island, in New York. Description Overview Chanticlare was constructed in the 1920s for attorney and Union Carbide executive Jesse J. Ricks. The mansion, designed in the English Tudor-style by Frederick A. Godley, featured 42-rooms – including a music room/ballroom. Failed preservation efforts In the 1960s, following the deaths of Jesse Ricks and his wife, their children would sell off the remaining land. Originally, the developers of the Chanticlare at Flower Hill subdivision, Edwin and Walter Ketay, wanted to save the mansion, and made attempts to do so. One of the plans for its preservation was for C.W. William Russell Grace
William Russell Grace (May 10, 1832 – March 21, 1904) was an Irish-American politician, the first Roman Catholic mayor of New York City, and the founder of W. R. Grace and Company. Early life Grace was born in Ireland in Riverstown near the Cove of Cork to James Grace and Eleanor May Russell (née Ellen) while the family was away from home, and raised on Grace property at Ballylinan in Queens (now Laois) County near the town of Athy.
