Sunnyside (Edisto Island, South Carolina)
Sunnyside, also known as the Townsend Mikell House, is a historic Plantation house in the Southern United States, plantation house located at Edisto Island, South Carolina, Edisto Island, Charleston County, South Carolina. The main house was built about 1875, and is a -story, rectangular, frame, weatherboard-clad residence. It features a mansard roof topped by a cupola and one-story, hipped roof wraparound porch. Also on the property are the tabby foundation of a cotton gin; two small, rectangular, one-story, gable roof, weatherboard-clad outbuildings; a -story barn; and the Sunnyside Plantation Foreman's House. The Foreman's House is a two-story, weatherboard-clad, frame residence built about 1867. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, with a boundary increase in 1994. Edisto Island, South Carolina
Edisto Island is one of South Carolina's Sea Islands, the larger part of which lies in Charleston County, with its southern tip in Colleton County. The town of Edisto Beach is in Colleton County, while the Charleston County part of the island is unincorporated. The island, the town, and the Edisto River are named after the historic Edistow people, a Native American sub-tribe of the Cusabo Indians, who inhabited the island as well as nearby mainland areas. History Indigenous peoples often had fishing camps on the islands, using them seasonally. The historic Edisto people are known to have occupied the island as well as mainland areas and traded with the upcountry Catawba. The sub-tribe became extinct during the colonial period. A mansard or mansard roof (also called a French roof or curb roof) is a four-sided gambrel-style hip roof characterised by two slopes on each of its sides, with the lower slope, punctured by dormer windows, at a steeper angle than the upper. The steep roof with windows creates an additional floor of habitable space (a garret), and reduces the overall height of the roof for a given number of habitable storeys.
