Sunkist Kids
Sunkist Kids is a wrestling club and nonprofit organization based in Scottsdale, Arizona. History Founded in 1976, Sunkist Kids has produced 55 Olympic medalists since its inception. Many of American wrestling's greatest champions are from the organization, such as wrestling legend John Smith (two-time Olympic gold medalist and four-time world champion), women's wrestling pioneer Tricia Saunders (four-time world champion), Cael Sanderson (2004 Olympic gold medalist), and Greco-Roman wrestler Rulon Gardner (2000 Olympic heavyweight gold medalist). The head coach is currently Mark Perry. Since 1976, the ''Sunkist Kids'' Wrestling Club has produced more Olympic, world, and U.S. national champions than any other elite wrestling club in the United States. Amateur Wrestling
Amateur wrestling is a variant of wrestling practiced in collegiate, school, or other amateur level competitions. There are two international wrestling styles performed in the Olympic Games: freestyle and Greco-Roman. Both styles are under the supervision of the United World Wrestling (UWW; formerly known as FILA, from the French acronym for International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles). A similar style, commonly called collegiate (also known as scholastic or folkstyle), is practiced in colleges and universities, secondary schools, middle schools, and among younger age groups in the United States. John Smith (American Wrestler)
John William Smith (born August 9, 1965) is an American Collegiate wrestling, folkstyle and Freestyle wrestling, freestyle wrestler and coach. Smith was a two-time NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, NCAA Division I national champion, and a List of World and Olympic Champions in men's freestyle wrestling#6 World Level Championships, six-time List of World and Olympic Champions in men's freestyle wrestling, world level champion with two Olympic Games, Olympic Championships and four World Wrestling Championships, World Wrestling Championships. Tricia Saunders
Tricia Saunders (born as ''Patricia McNaughton''; February 21, 1966 in Ann Arbor, Michigan) is an American amateur wrestler and pioneer in the sport of Women's Freestyle Wrestling. She earned a total of five FILA Wrestling World Championships medals, four gold and one silver. Throughout her career she never lost to an American, and collected eleven national titles. She was the first woman to be inducted to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum in Stillwater, Oklahoma and the first American woman to be inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame in Istanbul, Turkey. Cael Norman Sanderson ( ; born June 20, 1979) is an American former folkstyle and freestyle wrestler who is the current head coach of Penn State University's wrestling team. As a wrestler, he won an Olympic Gold medal and was undefeated in four years of college wrestling at Iowa State University (ISU) (159–0), becoming a four-time NCAA Division I champion (1999–2002). He is the only wrestler in NCAA Division I history to go undefeated in official matches with more than 100 wins. Rulon Gardner
Rulon Ellis Gardner (born August 16, 1971) is an American retired Greco-Roman Olympic Gold Medalist wrestler. He competed at the 2000 and 2004 Olympics and won the gold medal in 2000, defeating Russia's three-time reigning gold medalist Aleksandr Karelin in the final. Karelin was previously unbeaten for 13 years in international competition. Gardner won a bronze medal at the 2004 Games. Personal background Gardner was born in Afton, Wyoming. He is the son of Reed and Virginia Gardner and the last of nine children. His second great grandfather was Archibald Gardner, who was one of the early settlers of Star Valley, Wyoming. Mark Perry (amateur Wrestler)
The Iowa Hawkeyes are the athletic teams that represent the University of Iowa, located in Iowa City, Iowa. The Hawkeyes have varsity teams in 22 sports, 8 for men and 14 for women; a 15th women's sport will be added in 2023. The teams participate in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and are members of the Big Ten Conference. Currently, the school's athletic director is Gary Barta. Scholastic Wrestling
Scholastic wrestling, also known in the United States as folkstyle wrestling, is a style of amateur wrestling practiced at the high school and middle school levels in the United States. This wrestling style is essentially collegiate wrestling with some slight rule modifications. According to an athletics participation survey taken by the National Federation of State High School Associations, boys' wrestling ranked eighth in terms of the number of schools sponsoring teams, with 9,445 schools participating in the 2006–07 school year. Also, 257,246 boys participated in the sport during that school year, making scholastic wrestling the sixth most popular sport among high school boys. Freestyle Wrestling
Freestyle wrestling is a style of wrestling originated from Great Britain and the United States. Along with Greco-Roman, it is one of the two styles of wrestling contested in the Olympic Games. American high school and men's college wrestling is conducted under different rules and is termed scholastic and collegiate wrestling. American collegiate women's wrestling is conducted under freestyle rules. Freestyle wrestling, like collegiate wrestling, has its greatest origins in catch-as-catch-can wrestling. In both styles the ultimate goal is to throw and pin the opponent to the mat, which results in an immediate win.
