Sunflower is a town in Sunflower County, Mississippi. The population was 1,159 at the 2010 census. Demographics 2020 census As of the 2020 United States Census, there were 964 people, 424 households, and 278 families residing in the town. 2000 census As of the census of 2000, there were 696 people, 229 households, and 166 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,719.3 people per square mile (671.8/km). There were 242 housing units at an average density of 597.8 per square mile (233.6/km). The racial makeup of the town was 27.87% White, 71.26% African American, 0.43% Asian, and 0.43% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.14% of the population. Jerry Butler Jr. (born December 8, 1939) is an American soul singer-songwriter, producer, musician, and retired politician. He was the original lead singer of the R&B vocal group the Impressions, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991. After leaving the group in 1960, Butler achieved over 55 ''Billboard'' Pop and R&B Chart hits as a solo artist including "He Will Break Your Heart", " Let It Be Me" and " Only the Strong Survive". William Best (May 27, 1913 – February 27, 1962), known professionally as Willie Best or Sleep n' Eat, was an American television and film actor. Best was one of the first African American film actors and comedians to become well known. In the 21st century, his work, like that of Stepin Fetchit, is sometimes reviled because he was often called upon to play stereotypically lazy, illiterate, and/or simple-minded characters in films. Of the 124 films he appeared in, he received screen credit in at least 77, an unusual feat for an African American bit player. Freedom Schools were temporary, alternative, and free schools for African Americans mostly in the South. They were originally part of a nationwide effort during the Civil Rights Movement to organize African Americans to achieve social, political and economic equality in the United States.
