Sundown (Six60 Song)
"Sundown" is a song by New Zealand band Six60, released as the final single from their third album ''Six60'' in August 2020. Background and composition The song's instruments are primarily samples of taonga pūoro (traditional Māori instruments). The samples were taken from an album by Hinewehi Mohi, which the song's producer Malay used as a basis for the track. Six60's lead singer Matiu Walters felt the song was one of his favourite tracks from the band's third album, describing it as "sound ngexactly like where we are right now." Release and promotion The song was released as a single in the lead-up to their documentary film '' Six60: Till the Lights Go Out'' (2020). A music video was produced for the song, and released on 30 October. The video was directed by Connor Pritchard, who was given full creative control by the band, and shot over three days. Six60
Six60 are a New Zealand pop rock band formed in Dunedin, Otago in 2008. The band consists of Matiu Walters (lead vocals, guitar), Ji Fraser (lead guitar), Chris Mac (bass guitar), Marlon Gerbes (synthesiser), Hoani Matenga (bass guitar) and Eli Paewai (drums). Their self-titled debut album was released on 10 October 2011 on their own label Massive Entertainment. The album was produced and mixed by Tiki Taane and debuted at number one in the New Zealand charts and was certified gold within its first week of release. Their first two singles " Rise Up 2.0" and " Don't Forget Your Roots" reached number one and number two respectively on the RIANZ singles chart and were both certified double and triple platinum. Recorded Music NZ (formerly the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ)) is a non-profit trade association of record producers, distributors and recording artists who sell recorded music in New Zealand. Tidal (stylized in all caps) is a Norwegian-American subscription-based music, podcast and video streaming service that offers audio and music videos. Tidal was launched in 2014 by Swedish public company Aspiro which is now majority-owned by Block, Inc., an American payment processing company. Kapa Haka
Kapa haka is the term for Māori action songs and the groups who perform them. It literally means 'group' () and 'dance' (). Kapa haka is an important avenue for Māori people to express and showcase their heritage and cultural Polynesian identity through song and dance. Modern kapa haka traces back to pre-European times where it developed from traditional forms of Māori performing art; haka, (weaponry), (ball attached to rope or string) and (traditional Māori songs). There is a regular national kapa haka competition currently called Te Matatini that has been running since 1972. A kapa haka performance involves choral singing, dance and movements associated with the hand-to-hand combat practised by Māori in mainly precolonial times, presented in a synchronisation of action, timing, posture, footwork and sound. Pere Wihongi
Pere Te Ruru o te Ramana Wihongi (born ), sometimes known mononymously as PERE, is a New Zealand musician, voice actor, choreographer, and kapa haka performer. She is part of the award-winning music groups Maimoa and Te Kākano. Early life Wihongi was born and raised in Herekino. The family moved to Auckland when Wihongi was 9, and she began attending the Te Kura Kaupapa Māori ā Rohe o Māngere Kura Kaupapa Māori, immersion school. While there she competed in and won the Ngā Manu Kōrero speech competition. She then attended South Seas Film & Television School to pursue a career in television. Career Television Wihongi's first job was as a production assistant, but eventually she worked her way up to be a reporter on news and current affairs shows such as ''Te Karere'' and ''Marae (TV series), Marae'', and presenting the children's show ''Pūkana''. Mai FM is New Zealand's largest urban contemporary radio network, promoting Māori language and culture and broadcasting hip hop and rhythm and blues. It is located in Auckland, and is available in ten markets around the country. The network targets 15- to 34-year-olds, and reaches an estimated 382,300 different listeners each week. ''Six60'' is the third self-titled full-length studio album by New Zealand rock band Six60. It was released on 8 November 2019 through New Zealand label Massive Entertainment. Production was handled mainly by Malay, together with Printz Board, Big Taste, E. Kidd Bogart and Justin Gray. It debuted atop of the Official New Zealand Music Chart on the week of 18 November 2019 and as of December 2020 has never left the top five since then. Hinewehi Mohi
Dame Hinewehi Mohi (born 1964) is a New Zealand musician and producer, best known for her double-platinum album ''Oceania'' (1999) and its lead single " Kotahitanga (Union)", performing the New Zealand National Anthem in Māori during the 1999 Rugby World Cup, and as a producer for the 2019 Māori language compilation album ''Waiata / Anthems''. As a television producer, Mohi has worked to produce television programmes such as ''Mōteatea'' and ''Marae DIY''. Early life Mohi was born in Waipukurau in the Hawke's Bay Region, New Zealand, and is of Ngāti Kahungunu and Ngāi Tūhoe descent. She attended St Joseph's Māori Girls' College in Taradale, New Zealand, later receiving a BA in Māori from the University of Waikato in 1985, where she was heavily involved with kapa haka groups.
