Sunderland Stars
The Sunderland Stars were a motorcycle speedway team who raced at the Sunderland Greyhound Stadium from 1971 until 1974 in the Britrish League Division Two when Len Silver acted as promoter on behalf of Allied Presentations Ltd. History Speedway was operational at the venue for part of one season when eight meetings were staged in 1964 under the "Saints" nickname. The Saints introduced Aussies Jim Airey and Gordon Guasco to British Speedway during 1964. The inaugural season of league speedway took place during the 1971 British League Division Two season but unfortunately the team finished 17th out of 17. This was followed by two seasons with 12th and 11th place finishes. In 1974, the club came under new ownership and were nicknamed the "Gladiators". It was also their final season before closure. 1964 Provincial Speedway League
The 1964 Provincial Speedway League was the fifth and final season of the Provincial League in the United Kingdom. Twelve speedway teams took part. A second division of British speedway would not return until 1968. Season summary The 1964 season started in controversy which led to the Provincial League running 'black'. Officially the 1964 Provincial League season did not exist. Wolverhampton Wolves refused to move up to the National League after winning the Provincial League title in 1963. The two leagues could not agree about the situation which led to the Provincial League being outlawed by the Speedway Control Board. All National League riders were forbidden to ride on Provincial League tracks. Provincial League riders were warned by the Speedway Control Board that they were in breach of ACU regulations and could be suspended from all competitive racing. Vic Harding
Vic Harding (5 July 1952 in East Ham, London – 8 June 1979 Whipps Cross, London) was a motorcycle speedway rider. Career Harding began at the Rye House training school in 1970 run by Len Silver and spent several seasons trying to break into a league team.Fenn, C.(2003). ''Hackney Speedway, Friday at Eight''. In 1974 the Sunderland Gladiators handed him the chance. In 1975 he moved to Weymouth Wizards.Lawson,K (2018) “Riders, Teams and Stadiums”. In 1977 Len Silver signed him for the Hackney Hawks from Weymouth and spent most of that season as reserve. In 1978 he began improving so much that by 1979 he was a heat leader. Death Tragedy struck on 8 June 1979 when Harding was killed whilst riding for Hackney at Hackney Wick Stadium, Waterden Road. He was in a heat as a replacement for Bo Petersen but during the race he was involved in a terrible crash with Steve Weatherley. Allan Russell Dent (born 22 July 1940) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider from England. He earned one international cap for the England national speedway team. Biography Dent began his British leagues career riding for Newcastle Diamonds during the newly formed 1965 British League season. Halfway through the 1967 season he moved north of the border to join the Scottish club Glasgow Tigers on loan. He returned to Newcastle for the start of the 1970 Season. George Barclay (speedway Rider)
George A. Barclay (born 1 April 1935 in Elephant & Castle, London, England) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Career Barclay started his career with the West Ham Hammers in the British League, during the 1966 British League season. Barclay joined the Sunderland Stars in 1971 and remained with them until their closure in 1974. 1974 British League Division Two Season
The 1974 British League Division Two season was the second tier of motorcycle speedway in Great Britain. It was the final season of British League Division Two before it was renamed as the New National League. Summary The league was again expanded by one team from 18 to 19 teams. Weymouth Wizards were the new addition to the league, returning to action after five years out. Additionally there were two in and two out; Hull Vikings had moved up to the British League swapping places with Coatbridge Tigers and also swapping their top riders. Rayleigh Rockets closed down but the promotion, riders and nickname moved to Rye House. It was the first season of speedway at Rye House since the 1959 Southern Area League. 1973 British League Division Two Season
The 1973 British League Division Two season was the second tier of motorcycle speedway in Great Britain. Summary The 1973 season saw the league expanded to 18 teams with the addition of Chesterton Potters. The team had last raced during the 1963 Provincial Speedway League season under the name of the Stoke Potters. Boston Barracudas won their first title and went on to win the league and cup double. Boston had finished runner-up to Crewe Kings the previous season, with decent season averages recorded by five riders Arthur Price, Jim Ryman, Carl Glover, Russ Osborne and Ray Bales. With a largely unchanged team, they went one place better by sealing the league title. The 1972 British League Division Two season was the second tier of motorcycle speedway in Great Britain. Summary The league still consisted of 17 teams with two teams leaving the league and two teams entering. The Rochdale Hornets had disbanded for good at the end of the previous season, whilst Ipswich Witches moved up to the British League. Two newly created teams Ellesmere Port Gunners and Scunthorpe Saints joined the league. The Romford Bombers promotion and team moved to the West Ham Stadium replacing the defunct West Ham Hammers at the stadium but halfway through the season, they moved again to become Barrow Happy Faces as their sponsor at the time was Duckhams Oil - its happy face logo was prominently displayed on the team's race jackets. 1971 British League Division Two Season
The 1971 British League Division Two season was the second tier/division motorcycle speedway in Great Britain. Summary The league continued with 17 teams in its fourth season despite Reading Racers moving up to Division One and two teams dropping out because there were three new entrants to the league. Doncaster Dragons disbanded for good, with the promotion and some of the riders moving to Birmingham and reformed the Birmingham Brummies, who had last raced in 1957. The Crayford Highwayman also dropped out and the Middlesbrough Teessiders changed their name to Teesside Teessiders. Birmingham were one of the new entrants along with Hull Vikings and Sunderland Stars. Hull had last seen league speedway in 1949 and Sunderland in 1964. Sunderland Greyhound Stadium
Sunderland Greyhound Stadium is a greyhound racing track situated at Fulwell in the City of Sunderland and English county of Tyne and Wear. The stadium is owned by ARC and racing takes place every Wednesday and Friday evening as well as an additional BAGS meeting on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Gordon Guasco
Gordon Guasco (born 24 November 1940 in Sydney, New South Wales - died, 16 November 1970 in Sydney) was an Australian motorcycle speedway rider who was a favourite at both the Sydney Showground Speedway and Liverpool Speedway. Guasco also rode in the United Kingdom between 1964 and 1969 for Sunderland, Wolverhampton and Poole. Early life Gordon Guasco, known as "Smut" to his childhood friends, grew up in Horsley Park, then considered "the bush" but now a suburb of Sydney. The son of an Italian immigrant, Gordon attended Liverpool Boys' High School but left at the age of 14 to enter a sign writing apprenticeship. His employer was a man named Des Lawrence who was also a well known Sydney speedway photographer. After Guasco started racing, it was Lawrence who suggested that he adopt the horse as his emblem to exploit his initials of "GG" (a long-held nickname for horses) and Horse was to be Guasco's nickname for the length of his racing career.
