Suncrest, Washington
Suncrest is a census-designated place (CDP) in Stevens County, Washington, United States. Though it is not incorporated as a city or town, the CDP's population of 5,413 at the 2020 census makes Suncrest the largest community in the county. The community is located along the Spokane River 9.7 miles northwest of the city of Spokane, of which it is a exurb and bedroom community. The community experienced substantial growth starting in the mid-1980s, with gated community and suburban style development. State Route 291 is the main thoroughfare through Suncrest, as well as its main connection to the surrounding area including Spokane. Rosauers Supermarkets, Inc. is a regional chain of supermarkets in the Western United States, based in Spokane, Washington. Founded in 1934 by J. Merton Rosauer, Rosauers was sold in 1984 to Spokane-based URM Stores, and it eventually grew to 22 stores under the Huckleberry's Natural Market, Rosauers, and Super 1 Foods brands. Nine Mile Falls, Washington
Nine Mile Falls is an unincorporated community in Spokane County, Washington and Stevens County, Washington, United States. The community straddles the Spokane River away from downtown Spokane, at the location of a former falls that has been the site of Nine Mile Dam since 1908. Following the river, the community is located downstream from downtown. Nine Mile Falls has a post office with ZIP code 99026. Geography As the name suggests, the community is located nine miles northwest of Downtown Spokane along the Spokane River. That naming convention can also be seen in the nearby community of Seven Mile and the Spokane neighborhood of Five Mile Prairie. Colville, Washington
Colville is a city in Stevens County, Washington, United States. The population was 4,673 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stevens County. History John Work, an agent for The Hudson's Bay Company, established Fort Colvile near the Kettle Falls fur trading site in 1825. It replaced the Spokane House and the Flathead Post as the main trading center on the Upper Columbia River. The area was named for Andrew Colvile, a Hudson's Bay Company governor. The fort continued to be used for some time as a center of mining and transportation/supply support associated with gold rushes in the 1850s, particularly the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush. Little Spokane River
The Little Spokane River is a major tributary of the Spokane River, approximately long, in eastern Washington in the United States. It drains a rural area of forested foothills and a farming valley north of the city of Spokane along the Idaho–Washington border. It has two branches, one starting west of Newport and the other stemming from Eloika lake farther west. The two branches come together between the communities of Elk upstream and Milan downstream. The supply from Eloika is quite warm in the summer and has different fish habitat than the colder branch from Newport. The best trout fishing is where the two branches come together, but is on privately owned land. It is also a privately owned water body, which is rare. Spokane House
Spokane House was a fur-trading post founded in 1810 by the British-Canadian North West Company, located on a peninsula where the Spokane River and Little Spokane River meet. When established, it was the North West Company's farthest outpost in the Columbia River region. An American rival of the NWC, the Pacific Fur Company opened a station adjacent to Spokane House, called Fort Spokane. The War of 1812 and ongoing supply issues caused the collapse of the PFC, with its posts now under the control of the NWC. North West Company
The North West Company was a fur trading business headquartered in Montreal from 1779 to 1821. It competed with increasing success against the Hudson's Bay Company in what is present-day Western Canada and Northwestern Ontario. With great wealth at stake, tensions between the companies increased to the point where several minor armed skirmishes broke out, and the two companies were forced by the British government to merge.
