Sunamganj-2 is a constituency represented in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) of Bangladesh since 2017 by Joya Sengupta of the Awami League. Joya Sengupta
Jaya Sengupta (born 21 September 1943) is a Bangladesh Awami League politician, doctor, and Member of Parliament of Bangladesh. Her husband was Suranjit Sengupta, a senior leader of Bangladesh Awami League and former Minister of Bangladesh Railway. Career Sengupta was married to veteran Bangladesh Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta. She was a senior official in the non-governmental organisation Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC). Her husband was a member of Bangladesh Awami League Advisory Council. Sengupta was elected to parliament from Sunamganj-2 constituency in Sunamganj District. She was elected in a by-election after the death of her husband, Suranjit Sengupta. She defeated her nearest rival Mahbub Hossain Reju in the by election, she had more than double the vote her opponent had. Her husband was the Member of Parliament from Sunamganj-2. Suranjit Sengupta
Suranjit Sengupta (5 May 1945 – 5 February 2017) was a Bangladesh Awami League politician. He resigned in 2012 as the first Railway Minister of Bangladesh. He was the member of parliament from Sunamganj-2 constituency in the Jatiya Sangsad and a member of the party's advisory council. He was the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry. Early life and education Sengupta was born in Derai Upazila, Sunamganj District, to Devendra Nath Sengupta and Sumati Bala Sengupta. Among four brothers and a sister, he was the youngest. He completed his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Dhaka. He earned his LLB at the Central Law College and practised law for a while. Birth and early life Golam Jilani Chowdhury was born in the Sunamganj District of the Sylhet Division in Bangladesh. Political life Sunamganj District politician Ghulam Jilani Chowdhury filed a case in the Electoral Tribunal on charges of tampering with the fourth parliamentary elections. Tribunal declared Ghulam Jilani Chowdhury a winner. But Suranjit enjoyed the full term of Parliament at that time. Derai Upazila
Derai ( bn, দিরাই) is an upazila (sub-district) of the Sunamganj District in northeastern Bangladesh, part of the Sylhet Division. History Derai was previously known as Babaganj Bazar. It was home to two influential Hindu residents; Jitarāma and Dvidarāma, who renamed the area to Derai Bazar. On 10 December 1892, the Assam Gazette notification #5954 recognised the name of the area as Derai. In 1938, the Nankar Rebellion started in Derai and surrounding areas. Derai was made a thana in 1942. During the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, a brawl took place in Derai between the Pakistan Army and Bengali freedom fighting forces. Among the freedom fighters here, Commander Ataur Rahman and Abdul Khaliq were wounded with Azimullah, Kuti Miah and Gopendra Das being killed. Sullah ( bn, শাল্লা, Shalla), also spelt Sulla, is an upazila (sub-district) of the Sunamganj District, located in Bangladesh's Sylhet Division. Its headquarters is located in Ghungiargaon. History It is generally thought that the area presently comprising Sullah Upazila was formerly inhabited by the Khasi people, which can be understood from the Khalisha Hati, Bara Hati, Kakura Hati and Godir Bak of Chobbisha village. The two mounds discovered in the village of Khalli and other mounds also provides evidence for thousand-year old tribal settlement. The Jatiya Sangsad ( bn, জাতীয় সংসদ, lit=National Parliament, translit=Jatiyô Sôngsôd), often referred to simply as the ''Sangsad'' or JS and also known as the House of the Nation, is the supreme legislative body of Bangladesh. The current parliament of Bangladesh contains 350 seats, including 50 seats reserved exclusively for women. Elected occupants are called Member of Parliament, or MP. 2008 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 29 December 2008. The two main parties in the election were the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Khaleda Zia, and the Bangladesh Awami League Party, led by Sheikh Hasina. The Bangladesh Awami League Party formed a fourteen-party Grand Alliance including Ershad's Jatiya Party, while the BNP formed a four-party alliance which included the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami. The election was originally scheduled for January 2007, but it was postponed by a military-controlled caretaker government for an extended period of time. The elections resulted in a landslide victory for the Awami League-led grand alliance, which won 263 seats out 300. The main rival four-party alliance received only 32 seats, with the remaining four going to independent candidates.
