Sun Jianguo
Sun Jianguo (; born 1952) is a retired admiral of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). He served as Deputy Chief of the Joint Staff from 2009 to 2017. Biography Sun Jianguo was born in 1952 in Wuqiao, Hebei. He joined the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in 1968, and graduated from the PLA Navy Submarine Academy in 1978. From 1996 to 2000 he served as deputy commander of the Navy submarine base and President of the Submarine Academy. He was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff of the PLA Navy in 2000, and promoted to Chief of Staff in 2004. In 2006 he became Assistant to the PLA Chief of Staff, and was promoted to Deputy PLA Chief of Staff in 2009. In 2013, Sun replaced Qi Jianguo as head of the China Institute for International Strategic Studies, taking over responsibility for military intelligence and diplomacy. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) is the principal military force of the People's Republic of China and the armed wing of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The PLA consists of five service branches: the Ground Force, Navy, Air Force, Rocket Force, and Strategic Support Force. Rear admiral is a senior naval flag officer rank, equivalent to a major general and air vice marshal and above that of a commodore and captain, but below that of a vice admiral. It is regarded as a two star "admiral" rank. It is often regarded as a two-star rank with a NATO code of OF-7. Qi Jianguo (; born August 1952) is a retired general of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. He served as Deputy Chief of the Joint Staff from 2012 to 2016. He formerly served as Commander of the 12th Group Army. A participant in the Sino-Vietnamese conflicts, he is one of the few serving PLA generals with battle experience. Biography Qi Jianguo was born in August 1952 in Wendeng, Shandong Province. In his early years he worked as a sent-down youth in Dengzhou, Henan Province. He joined the PLA in 1970, and graduated from PLA Nanjing Army Commander College ( 南京陆军指挥学院) with a bachelor's degree. Qi joined the PLA as an ordinary soldier and rose through the army ranks.
